The New Voortrekkers (Aug 1997) When the Boers of South Africa set off on their great Voortrek 160 years ago into the African hinterland, they wanted to set up their own Afrikaner homeland and escape British domination. Now a group of Afrikaners, many descended from the original Voortrekkers, are setting off again, this time to northern Mozambique. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures# They fear that their farms at home are being swallowed up or given back to the newly affluent black and coloured South Africans. Many of the Afrikaners belong to the far right who have been active in the pursuit of an Afrikaner homeland. They claim that the move to Mozambique is merely to control their destiny. Mozambique s locals are not so sure the influx of Afrikaners is a good idea. Their forests are being felled and they fear losing their land. As the Mozambicans stamp and sing at a traditional ceremony, the white South African families hold a separate church service thanking God for a good harvest. Can the two groups live in harmony and who will really benefit from this Second Great Trek ? After the War (July 1997) A historic report profiling Mindanao s most prominent guerrilla leader-turned-politician: Nur Misauri Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures# Nur Misuari is finding peace as tricky as the war between the Muslim minority and the government that he helped end. Skilfully showing off an M16, Misuari is failing to woo voters outside the autonomous Muslim region he controls. The island s 85% Christian majority remains deeply suspicious. Even in his capital, Cotabato, crime is spiralling. Antonette Lu tries in vain to hold back tears. Her father Fernando is her third family member to be kidnapped. Worryingly, many of Misuari s former guerrillas are defecting to the extremist Muslim MILF. At a remote jungle camp, Abu Bakar, MILF military commander Hadj Morad boasts his army s strength. The MILF has its own courts and even a firing squad. Prisoners peer out of wooden barracks awaiting trial by Islamic law. In General Santos, Muslims such as Laila Matabalao vow they d die rather than see their mosque demolished for a 5 star hotel. If Misuari fails them they ll vote for someone else. Misuari s difficulties echo those of his island in the Philippines, scarred by decades of war. Run for Your Life (1997): A historic report filmed during CPP party leader Hun Sen s takeover of Cambodia. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures# Our camera follows officials of Prince Ranariddh s Funcinpec party as they are secretly smuggled out of the country. After a dash to the airport by car, Funcinpec Head of Security Hong Dar waits nervously as his false papers are checked by airport officials. Like many others denied assistance by foreign embassies in Cambodia s latest crisis, this is his only way out, convinced he ll be tortured and assassinated if he stays. Another fleeing Funcinpec official, his face disguised, tells how Hun Sen s soldiers came to his house and shot his wife. He too is smuggled out the same way. Surrounded by security guards, Hun Sen states he has "no regrets" in using force to oust rival Prince Ranariddh. Press reporters asking unpalatable questions are quickly shoved out of the crowd. Senior Funcinpec member Ung Huot admits Hun Sen approved his appointment as new First Premier. He promises free elections despite suspicions he s merely a puppet of the CPP. Can Kim lost two children when a shell hit her home. Her youngest child, still wounded, strokes her mother s face as she weeps. Human Rights Lawyer Brad Adams says Funcinpec fears are well founded. Battlefield Tours (July 1997) The Last Post is played in Ypres at 8pm every evening to honour soldiers who gave their lives in Flanders during the First World War. In Belgium and France a new industry is increasingly gaining popularity - tours of war graves. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures# Muriel Nottall, on a four day battlefield and grave tour from England, lays a poppy at a grave of an unknown soldier because they are often neglected . Tony Webb has brought his 83 year old father on the tour in order to show him his father s grave. Soldiers from all over the world died a usually unheroic death in the muddy trenches of these battlefields. A small ceremony is held by tour organiser, Joe Street, to commemorate the most unheroic soldiers of all; those shot at dawn for desertion. They are remembered now mostly with pity. As the battlefield tour moves on to France, more commemorations are held for the Canadians who joined the allied attack at the Somme, where over 1 million lives were lost in just four and a half months. Female Infanticide (1997): A report on female infanticide in India, and what is being done to eliminate this horrific practice. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures# Synopsis: Despite it being illegal, the culture of dowries still exists in certain parts of India. As a result, raising a daughter can be costly - raising two, a financial impossibility. For the poorest families in society this leads them to killing their baby daughters, a process known as female infanticide. The problem, while one that persists, is getting better; programmes have been set up to teach young women skills which will allow them to provide for themselves financially, economic incentives are being put in place to encourage families to keep their daughters, and organisations and women s groups are educating young women in order to bring about a slow but necessary change in societal attitudes. Yet progress isn t always so black and white. A woman was recently sentenced to life imprisonment for killing her baby daughter. Does this put legal pressure on families to raise their second daughters, or is it simply punishing the victims for a wider societal problem? ABC Australia speaks to experts on the issue, and to families whose lives have been affected by the brutal practice. An Activist Silenced (1997): Increasing numbers of Indonesians are daring to oppose the government despite the harsh penalties. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures# Synopsis: Democracy in 90 s Indonesia is flawed to say the least. Despite holding elections, alleged corruption, as well as control over the media and judicial system, undermine the country s claims to a free society. An interview conducted by an ABC journalist, asking Siti Hardiyanti Rukmana, daughter of President Surhato and ruling Golkar Party s star campaigner, makes front pages the next day - evidence of a country whose journalists do not ask politicians tough questions. Yet despite widespread government control, dissent is brewing. 27 year old Budiman Sudjatmlko s story epitomises the growing opposition to Surharto s rule as well as the fate which awaits those who speak out. In his final courtroom appearance Budiman gives a dramatic and colourful performance to a packed gallery of family and supporters. Handing out flowers to the judges of his case, he announces his lack of faith in the Indonesian justice system. Budiman s parents watch from the public gallery as, instead of making a plea, Budiman reads a four hour critique of the government. Only the judges, in danger of falling asleep, and the prosecution remain unmoved. Back in court to hear his sentence he refuses to stay to hear the verdict, but a verdict is given nonetheless - 13 years imprisonment. Before being escorted away in a police vehicle, he climbs on top of it in a defiant show of bravado. Yet it is not only radicals like Budiman who oppose the government. The Muslim based PPP, the de-facto opposition in the country, believe they have been marginalised by the Surhato regime. ABC Australia reports from Jakarta, conducting interviews with Rukmana and Budiman. Heaven on Earth? (March 1997) A disturbing report on how islanders found themself struggling for survival after foreigners bought their country s main assets. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures# After years of borrowing, the government found itself with debts beyond its capacity. Fed up with bankrolling its former colony, New Zealand finally pulled the economic plug. Cook Islands Prime Minister, Sir Geoffrey Henry denies embezzlement after the collapse of the Sheraton Hotel project, doubling the national debt. To recoup finance, the government laid off state workers and offloaded its most saleable assets to the highest bidders, invariably outsiders. Local businessman Norm Mitchell complains that he was never even given a chance to buy the Aitutaki Hotel. Intimidated by the authorities, his business partners are too frightened to appear before the camera. After losing his state job, Matunga turned to carving ukuleles for tourists. But when this failed to bring in enough money he decided to emigrate to Australia. But not all islanders feel the same: after 25 years in a government office, Nani feels liberated by her new job as tourist guide. But the rest of the population struggles to survive without the state wage which was once taken for granted. The Cannibals War (1996): As the trial of former Liberian dictator Charles Taylor begins, we bring back an exclusive report exposing the atrocities committed by Taylor s men. Filmed in the middle of the civil war, it includes footage of Taylor s supporters preparing to eat a human heart and a rare interview with Taylor. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures# Our film opens with gigantic US military helicopters hovering over Monrovia. The crackle of Kalashnikovs, Liberian music , echoes around the empty streets. This is a city with no laws of humanity as we know them. We discover a band of teenage NPFL fighters at a roadblock. Dead bodies lie at their feet, their chests sliced open from top to bottom, in the style of an African voodoo sacrifice. A boy brandishes a bucket, from which he proudly pulls a human heart. If I find my enemy I eat him , he boasts. But I only eat military men, not civilians. I am a human being after all. Some fighters believe that by eating an enemy you get his power. Charles Taylor sums up: We have heard of outright cannibalism but this is an issue of war. There is no civilised war. Death is death. For now the peace is holding. The UN are disarming troops on the streets. The market in Monrovia is full of people once again. But many think that Liberia s young cannibals have gone too far: a doctor prophesies disaster when they become the future leaders.
