What is the function of fashion? And where is its place in life? The #MiuMiuSS23 campaign and the ready-to-wear collection pose and attempt to answer such questions. In so doing, both also illustrate the profound affect wardrobe may have on human existence as an endlessly life enhancing form of self-expression. Photographed by Zoë Ghertner, the story is an exploration of character starring cross-disciplinary talent including #EverAnderson, #AcholAyor, #EmmaCorrin, #KendallJenner, #EstherMcGregor, #QuintessaSwindell, #KarolinWolter and #LimYoona. They are united in their courage and desire to challenge convention and in their distinctive beauty and sense of style. They are wearing a collection that plays on by now iconic #MiuMiu thematics: versions and subversions of uniform; the reproportioning of wardrobe archetypes including tailored jackets, shorts, trousers, skirts and shirts; references to sportswear and utilitarian outerwear embellished with oversized patch pockets, here re-imagined in silks and in a muted colour palette. The flip-flop sandal becomes a studiously strange hybrid sock boot. Looks are layered - an indication of the complexity of the people wearing them. Miuccia Prada has continuously searched for contemporary notions of appeal and allure in clothing. For all its rarefied understanding and acknowledgement of the importance of fashion, there is a humanity at play here that affords the freedom to be as serious or as playful, as fragile or as powerful and as dressed up or as understated as, at any given time, we may wish to be. Talent: Ever Anderson, Achol Ayor, Emma Corrin, Kendall Jenner, Esther McGregor, Quintessa Swindell, Karolin Wolter and Lim Yoona. Photography: Zoë Ghertner Stylist: Lotta Volkova.

Carla is pregnant and naked, just like in the photos where her mother poses pregnant with Carla herself. Sunlight streams through the windows. We see Super 8 shots of grandparents, uncles, aunts, fathers, great-grandparents; smiling, sewing, reciting poetry. Then, we see a young woman grow from the 60s to the present day, passing through the 80s, crossing the thresholds of femininity and history, until she meets Carla pregnant next to the blue sky of the Catalan coast. CARTA A MI MADRE PARA MI HIJO (LETTER TO MY MOTHER FOR MY SON), directed by #CarlaSimon, is the 24th commission from Miu Miu Women’s Tales. The acclaimed short-film series invites today’s most profound and original female directors to investigate vanity and femininity in the 21st century. Carla Simón (b.1986) is a Spanish film director. Her 2017 Catalan-language debut film, Summer 1993, became Spain s candidate for Best Foreign Film . Her most recent feature, Alcarràs — about the disappearance of traditional peach-harvesting activities in Catalonia — won the Golden Bear at the 72nd Berlinale, becoming the first Catalan-language film to do so. "CARTA A MI MADRE PARA MI HIJO (Letter to My Mother for My Son)" features veteran actress #AngelaMolina, who has worked with directors such as Luis Buñuel, Pedro Almodóvar, Bigas Lunas and Ridley Scott; #CeciliaGomez, known for her roles in Domingo, The Plague and Down There; and #AinetJounou, who stars in Alcarràs and the forthcoming Paula Ortiz directed Teresa. Both of Carla Simón’s parents died of AIDS when she was just six years old, and because of this, Simón has scarce memories of them as adults. “With this film for Miu Miu Women’s Tales, I want to give my son what I didn’t have: a family history.” For Simón, there is a special role that films play in people’s inner lives: “Cinema has the power to repair what is missing.” On the topic of Women’s Tales as a platform for female-led filmmaking, Simón remarks, “It’s very important in the creative process to question things, on set, with your team. I believe women directors are introducing this, and it’s very positive — not just for women, but for men, too”. Fragmentary and fleeting, Carta a mi madre para mi hijo (Letter to My Mother for My Son) is a homage to the filmmaker’s family that’s partly fictional and entirely heartfelt. “I’m an optimist,” Simón says, and her new film is full of tender hope in the midst of loss. It is a touching reminder that understanding who we are requires a lifelong process, piecing together real and imagined memories of the past, in order to compose a picture of the future. Carla Simon’s new episode for Women’s Tales will be premiered at the Venice Film Festival’s Giornate degli Autori on September 3rd 2022, along with a screening of House Comes with a Bird by Janicza Bravo. The short is afterwards available on Miu Miu digital channels. From September 5th, "CARTA A MI MADRE PARA MI HIJO (Letter to My Mother for My Son)" will be available to stream on MUBI globally. #MiuMiu #MiucciaPrada #MiuMiuWomensTales #VeniceFilmFestival

Miu Miu Women s Tales #10 - Les 3 Boutons - Trailer
“Miss Jasmine! I have a package for you!” The 14-year-old girl with braces takes a break from milking the goat. Her local postman has delivered a surprise. She opens it up. Out floats a magical magenta ball dress ten times her teenage size. “I am curious,” she says, and enters the folds of the dress. From here, Jasmine⎯headstrong, a dreamer, a realist⎯takes us on a modern anti-fairy tale through caves and stalagmites, streets and shop windows, obsessions and everyday empowerment. Les 3 Boutons is directed by the legendary 87-year-old Agnès Varda, considered by many as forerunner to French New Wave cinema, and winner of the first honorary Palm d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival this year. Les 3 Boutons marks the 10th commission from Miu Miu Women’s Tales, the acclaimed short-film series by women who critically celebrate femininity in the 21st century. This latest addition is a signature work from Varda’s unique world. It’s full of playful hallmarks from her six decades of making films which include the groundbreaking La Pointe Courte (1955), Cléo de 5 à 7 (1961), Sans toit ni loi (1985) and Les Plages d’Agnès (2009). “It’s playing a game with reality,” Varda says. “The game is called cinema.” Les 3 Boutons’ lead is newcomer Jasmine Thiré, and it was shot on location in Bonnieux and also rue Daguerre, Paris, where Varda has lived for 50 years. The story gently reverses the clichés of girlhood. Jasmine prefers school uniform and education to the easy allure of a Cinderella lifestyle. “I immediately saw the contradictory juxtaposition of farm life and haute couture,” explains Varda. “The most minimal element, the most essential one is the button. 3…2…1…go!” As the three buttons gradually fall from Jasmine’s dress, each full of promise and change, we realize that Varda’s description of “a young girl discovering herself” applies just as much to the ageless director as it does to the inquisitive protagonist.
