Watch the complete performance free of charge in HD quality on our website: https://www.concertgebouworkest.nl/en/beethoven-symphony-no-9-choral Iván Fischer leads the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, four vocal soloists and the Netherlands Radio Choir in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. You can watch the performance with or without Iván Fischer’s commentary. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 ‘Choral’ Ludwig van Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is a monumental work. Moreover, it is the first symphony that uses a choir (and vocal soloists) – hence the nickname ‘Choral’. In the Finale of his Ninth Symphony, Beethoven set parts of Friedrich Schiller’s famous ode An die Freude to music. The melody was very basic and of popular cut, but by continuing to develop this simple theme in more and more complex fashion, Beethoven was able to express the message of mankind’s salvation contained within Schiller’s ode. ‘All men become brothers!’ Iván Fischer, conductor Iván Fischer has been a welcome guest conductor with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra since 1987. Fischer’s way of working, which is as unusual as it is committed, and the musicians’ enthusiasm and virtuosity always result in very special performances. You can watch the performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with or without Iván Fischer’s commentary. The conductor’s fascinating explanation takes you straight to Beethoven’s time.

Watch the complete performance free of charge in HD quality on our website: https://www.concertgebouworkest.nl/en/mahler-symphony-no-9 The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra performs Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 9, conducted by Bernard Haitink. With the Ninth, his last completed Symphony, Mahler said farewell to life. Mahler’s Symphony No. 9 With his Symphony No. 9, Gustav Mahler not only took his leave from older forms of music, the piece also represents a farewell to life. Willem Mengelberg, who was the chief conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra from 1895 until 1945, stated that it was “a farewell to everybody whom he had loved and to the world. And to his art, his life, his music.” Mahler himself wrote the words “O Jugendzeit! Entschwundene! O Liebe! Verwehte!” in his final draft of the Ninth Symphony. Bernard Haitink, honorary conductor Bernard Haitink first conducted the Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1956. He was the orchestra’s chief conductor from 1961-88, and was named honorary conductor in 1999. From 1977 to 1987, Haitink received international acclaim for his interpretations of Mahler in the Eurovision Christmas Matinees. Many listeners still remember the last of these Matinees, with a poignant performance of the Ninth Symphony – shortly before Haitink’s retiring as chief conductor.
