It’s no coincidence that Hong Kong is Cantonese for fragrant harbor. The city was the epicenter of the incense trade in ancient times. Agarwood incense is a treasured commodity today. Harvested from aquilaria trees, it smells like a cross between nutty wood and sweet vanilla. It’s pricey. Customers pay more than $60,000 for roughly a pound of quality agarwood, according to Wah Yuen. He has been selling incense for 70 years and hand rolls each stick in his shop. It’s a tradition that is at risk of being lost as older people die and incense is produced in factories. The southern Appalachians were full of trails that connected the towns of the Cherokee Nation three hundred years ago. They were well-traveled routes until white settlers took the land that belonged to Native Americans. It seemed these historic footpaths would be lost forever. Then Lamar Marshall stepped up. A former land surveyor, this North Carolina man has spent the last 12 years mapping over 1,000 miles of Cherokee trails, preserving Native American history for future generations. And he is still at it. We went into the mountains with Marshall along with Kathi Littlejohn and Leroy Littlejohn, both Cherokee Tribal Elders, to walk in the footsteps of Native American travelers. The residents of Spreewald, Germany, are proud of their gherkins, as they should be. A Spreewald resident came up with the concept of pickling cucumbers—which grow in abundance in the region—over 150 years ago. Today, tourists visit the area to eat the salty, crunchy treat and visit the Gherkin Museum founded by Karl-Heinz Stark just after the reunification of Germany. Sixty miles outside of Berlin, Spreewald is a UNESCO biosphere reserve full of picturesque woodlands and a network of waterways. The best way to get around is in a punt, which is a water barge. Manfred, a punt driver, takes us on a scenic cruise through Spreewald before we meet up with Susi Beesk, a local celebrity who holds the title of Super-Gherkin Queen.
