I m doing a lot of clean up. Storing all the wood in another place and clearing the space in front of the cabins. The chicken coop is being sealed and I make some curtains for the outdoor kitchen. On 16 april I left Amsterdam on the bike cycling eastwards. No route, no planning, just living by the day. So far I have crossed Germany, Czech republic, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey. Next countries: Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan. www.espiritu-libre.com https://instagram.com/_espiritu.libre_/ www.facebook.com/martijndoolaard

WATCH FULL MOVIE: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/oneyearonabike While cycling from Amsterdam to Singapore I made many new friends. The amount of joy I’ve been welcomed with travelling half of the world was a revelation to me. Watching the news makes me sometimes afraid to travel. But it’s merely friendly people I came across on the road, even more so in the areas most people would not recommend me to go. This video is about best memories from the road with people. https://vimeo.com/ondemand/oneyearonabike What happens when you leave home on a bike with no other plan than to ride eastwards? Embarking on just such an adventure, Martijn Doolaard decided to cycle from Amsterdam to Singapore. One Year on a Bike chronicles his slow travels over 17,000 km—passing through the wilds of Eastern Europe, the mountains of Kyrgyzstan, and the temples of Myanmar. Stories of animal encounters, camping at salt lakes and on deserted beaches, and Iranian hospitality are accompanied by photography that captures the breathtaking scenery, the chance meetings and friendships, and the buzz of global cities. This movie and book details the beauty and self-discoveries, as well as the hardships and the gear necessary, on this incredible one-man journey.
A snipped from the road in Nevada, on my way from Vancouver to Patagonia. Captured by a drone.
Some randomly selected moments from my time on Saquila in October 2020, with Rob, Ulla, Nico, Jack, Marcello and Vedran.
I captured this portrait of my grandfather, Jan van Driel, in 2014 with my brother when he was still in good health. He passed away in summer 2021. The wind mill is on display at the Kinderdijk Museum in the Netherlands. The steam engines are owned by various family members. He will always be an inspiration of creativity and craftsmanship.
I bought two historic cabins on top of a hill in Italy with the goal to renovate them and create an off grid homestead. Monte Vandalino is the first mountain right next to my property. You can drive up a track quite far and then it s a short hour walk to the top. I ve finished the solar setup so it s ready to be locked and switched off. And I was invited by Daniele, a director of a museum in Turin and grandson of artist and freemason Paolo Pachetto. Some enchanting days at the cabin with the forest drenched in red and yellow. Most of the leaves have gone now after the föhn (warm wind). I finished the front door, so I can lock both cabins for winter. And was invited for lunch by priest Johannes who made pizzas in his masonry stove and showed me his chapel. I m returning from my weekend hike to Conca del Pra. Finishing up the patio and building back the stairs in between the two cabins. I m bringing the car to the valley to get a new clutch. I m cleaning the walls from old mortar with a high pressure washer. The masonry stove has arrived which takes a few rides up and down.
