Our solar system is being installed on the Tiny House! In this video, we meet the team from Solar Group (http://www.solargroup.co.nz) and watch the first part of our solar install. Because the roof of our Tiny House is so small, we needed a custom solution so both the hot water tank and the solar panel could fit on the roof. Thankfully, Roy and the team from Solar Group were up to the challenge! In our next video on the topic, we will be explaining how the system works and also showing the rest of the instillation. Natural builder Alan from BioBuild (http://www.biobuild.co.nz) talks us through the process of installing our weatherboards for the Tiny House. The weatherboards that we are using are the Elements Vulcan + Cladding system from Abodo (http://abodo.co.nz/product/vulcan-plus-cladding/). These thermally modified pine weatherboards are light weight, and very high performance. We will be going into more details on these weatherboards in a future video as they really are quite special! In an ideal situation, you'll be able to find weatherboards that are able to span the length of your house which means you don't need to worry about joining them. In most cases though, that's not possible. Our weatherboards come in lengths of 4.5 meters, which means we will be needing joins in our longer sections. In this video, Jacob Drayton from BioBuild Ltd (http://www.biobuild.co.nz) takes us through the process of joining weatherboards. Remember, there are many different kinds of weatherboards out there, all with different profiles and requirements. Make sure you get advice from the manufacturer as to how to correctly join the type that you have. Peak Oil, economic collapse, global warming. There is little question that if humanity remains on the path we are on now, then there is little hope for a sustained existence on the planet. We need to change our thinking and adopt a more harmonious stance to our relationship with the biosphere. The principles of permaculture teach us how it is possible to thrive on the earth and actually have a positive impact on the environment around us and together with the tiny house movement they provide a hopeful model for the future. Andrew Martin is the author of the book Rethink: ...Your world, Your future (http://amzn.to/1KShmDL). After waking up to the worlds sustainability crisis, Andrew left the high flying world of finance to move to New Zealand and start a permaculture farm where he now lives with his wife Beth. In this interview, we talk about his research, permaculture and how the tiny house movement provides insight into potential models of sustainable living. From the very beginning of this project, it was essential for me that my Tiny House be powered entirely though clean, renewable energy. Solar power is the cornerstone of this philosophy and so having the solar panels installed on the Tiny House feels like an incredible milestone. This tiny house is a craftsman s dream. There is such a high level of work that has gone into constructing every detail of this home. The construction is also completely sustainable with all items of the build being locally and sustainably sourced. It s not often you come across a tiny house, or indeed any house for that matter that has been finished to such an incredibly high standard as this home. Perhaps even rivalling the homes execution, is it s design with every inch being cleverly and effectively utilised. Better still, this home is designed to take full advantage of being on wheels and is designed for easy transportation. This spectacular tiny house situated on a multi generational family farm is absolutely breathtaking. Ruby grew up on this farm. The family has a deep connection to this land, and it s where Ruby wanted to deepen her roots by building her own home. Not wanting to get into a huge amount of debt, she wanted to keep her home small and simple and a tiny house was the ideal solution. She has added onto the main tiny house structure by creating seperate structures for both a shower / laundry room, as well as a toilet. Ruby is a gardener by profession and the area all around her home has been exquisitely planted to create majestic, productive gardens.. Plants even climb the exterior walls of the tiny house which helps to make the home feel even more enchanting. This is an amazing tiny house which has been situated in an incredibly special place. We hope you enjoy the full video tour! These two derelict old railway carriages have been converted into an absolutely stunning off the grid home. Packed full of character and history from their time on the railway, these carriages are now a wonderful place to call home. Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/livingbig Located in the Central Otago region in the South Island of New Zealand, this conversion project has been a true labour of love. The restoration and renovation took 8 years to get the home to it s current state working part time. https://www.livingbiginatinyhouse.com/railway-carriage-home-conversion/ Being located on such a remote property, the home is unable to connect to services and so is completely off the grid, capturing it s own rain water and generating it s power from a small solar system. In this weeks episode, we venture to the beautiful sub-tropical Northern Rivers region of New South Wales to visit a spectacular off-the-grid tiny house on wheels, situated amongst stunning syntropic, regenerative, food forest gardens. For anyone who has dreamed of going off-the-grid and escaping to paradise to grow food and live simply, this is a video tour you will want to check out! This amazing tiny house is situated amongst wonderful syntropic gardens. Similar in many ways to permaculture syntropic farming is a form of dynamic regenerative agricultural forestry which uses a systems thinking approach to create an abundant, healthy, natural food forest. Focus is placed on formation of healthy soil biology and establishing microclimates so that food production and agriculture is synchronised with regeneration of the land. Super cool stuff! Equally as impressive as the gardens is the amazing off-the-grid tiny house on wheels. The home is solar powered with abundant rain water collection. A composting toilet helps to reduce the homes water consumption. Beautifully designed, there is abundant outdoor living space so that Anthony and Kirra can enjoy year round indoor / outdoor living. I hope you enjoy the full video tour of this incredible tiny home! In this weeks episode, we visit a wonderful young family who have built their dream off-the-grid tiny house on wheels. There are so many advantages to DIY building a tiny house beyond just the cost. You get to put your heart, soul and character into a house to truly make it your own and that s exactly what s happened with this home. Dan And Julie have built this beautiful home for themselves and their two children. All throughout this build there are many examples of ultra-clever design ideas, including a huge loft net to access the children s bedroom and the ability to create a fully secured kid-safe loft. This really is a fantastic design for a young family! In this case, the family worked closely together with a builder to design and construct a lock-up house shell. This is a popular option for DIY builders, as it allows the structural part of the home to be professionally constructed, while still giving them all the freedom to build the interior fit-out by themselves. This tiny house is also designed to be completely off-the-grid, allowing the family many options for places to park up their home in the future. Dan works as a tattoo artist doing incredible designs for people all over the world. This week, we check out a game-changing trailer design which has revolutionised the tiny house industry. The split shift trailer, designed by Bay Engineering Solutions gives unparalleled functionality to the tiny house trailer, not only creating a great foundation with greater functionality for a home on wheels, but also enabling use of the trailer while the house is parked up! Bay Engineering supply these trailers for the New Zealand tiny house market, but with increased interest in their design from overseas, they have created plans that you can download to either DIY your own trailer, or give to an engineer to build one of these trailers for you. Find out more here: https://www.livingbiginatinyhouse.com/episodes/tiny-house-trailers/ In this episode, we talk all about the trailer design and what separates these split shift trailers from the others available on the market. When we started building our latest tiny house, we approached Bay Engineering Solutions who were happy to supply a trailer for our build, and we couldn’t be happier with the result.
