Braving the cold, all decked out in our winter attire, we decided to head into downtown Toronto to check out the Christmas Market. The Toronto Christmas market is an annual event that attracts thousands on weekends (and even weekdays) leading up to Christmas. With plenty of festive activities and food on offer one can peruse at a leisurely place eating street food, sipping on mulled wine and/or doing some last minute Christmas shopping. We highly recommend, if you ve got $12 to spare, gnawing on a turkey leg. It didn t take us long to warm up and start feeling the Christmas spirit as the spiced whisky tickled our bellies and Christmas caroling delighted our souls. If you re in Toronto from late November up until late December be sure to check out the Toronto Christmas Market. It is one of the top things to do in Toronto during December and is certainly an attraction not to be missed. A Christmas market is a street market which celebrates the traditional sights, sounds and scents of Christmas and is staged during the weeks leading up to Christmas. These markets originated in Germany, beginning in the early 1400 s, and are now being held in countries all over the world. The Toronto Christmas Market is pleased to present over 246 free performances on the main stage including choirs, carolers, brass bands and dance groups. HOURS OF OPERATION FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2014 – SUNDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2014 Hours of Operation Tuesday to Friday………………………12:00PM – 9:00PM Saturday and Sunday……………………10:00AM – 9:00PM Toronto Christmas Market Video Script: This holiday season Toronto will once again celebrate the romance and magic of a traditional Christmas at Toronto Christmas Market. Inspired by the Old World and influenced by the New, this free annual event captures all of the tradition, heritage and charm of a European Christmas Market, while showcasing hundreds of unique and local handcrafted products. Family friendly entertainment includes musicians, carolers and children’s choirs. We are in Toronto for the holidays and because it is just a few more days until Christmas, today we decided to come into the city and visit Toronto Christmas Market. Four calling birds, three French hens, two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree. You can t come to a Christmas market and not get any food. I just got myself a nice Oktoberfest sausage. This looks amazing, I am so hungry I haven t had lunch yet. Big bite. Oh it burns. It burns. So if you re really hungry and you ve got twelve dollars to spare why not come and grab a turkey leg. They re enormous. And there is just tonnes of people gnawing on them right now. I got myself a nice hot cup of mulled wine and they actually offered to put whisky in it so it has got a really nice kick to it. So for anyone who has never tried mulled wine before one of the biggest differences is just the amount of spices in it. It has got a real kick to it. It s got a lot of spice and it just goes down really nice and warm. And coming in at 10 bucks you better believe it that I m not going to waste so much as a drop. For last minute shoppers you can still buy your Christmas tree. They are right behind me. Chestnuts roasting on an open fire. That is a little scary Sam. Six geese are laying, five golden rings. For anyone interested in visiting the Christmas market next year, it is open most of December. We are here today on December 21st and it is actually the last day, so you ll want to try and do it a bit earlier in the month. And also it is really busy on weekends, so try and come during the week so you can have more of a magical experience and really have the place to yourself. This is part of our Travel in Canada series. We re making a series of videos showcasing Canadian culture, Canadian arts, Canadian foods, Canadian religion, Canadian cuisine and Canadian people. In this video, This Old House senior technical editor Mark Powers shows how to install a library ladder. (See below for a shopping list and tools.) SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse You might assume a rolling ladder belongs in a dark-paneled library filled with brass lamps and leather-bound first editions. But such a handsome and useful piece works equally well in a kitchen, to reach high cabinets; in a family room with a towering bookcase; or even in a cheerful reading nook, like the one at right. Hardware kits typically include rollers, wheels, and fasteners for the ladder; you ll buy the track separately and cut it to length. You can, of course, buy the ladder, unassembled, but we built ours from sturdy red oak. Follow along as This Old House senior technical editor Mark Powers walks you through the steps. Shopping List for How to Build a Rolling Library Ladder: - 1x4 oak boards, Get two 10-footers for the handrails. - 1x5 oak boards. Get one 10-footer for the treads. - 3/4-inch oak spindle. Get one 15 1/4-inch-long piece. - Ladder hardware kit. Order one that includes rollers, wheels, and fasteners. - Track hardware. Order a track to fit the width of your bookcase, plus brackets and finials. - Wood glue - Primer - Paint Tools for How to Build a Rolling Library Ladder: - Tape measure - Miter saw - Combination square -Jig saw or Circular saw - Drill/driver - Clamps - Router - 7/8-inch Forstner bit - 13/16-inch straight router bit - 3/8-inch roundover router bit with pilot - 1/8-inch bit - 1/4-inch bit - 23/64-inch bit - 120-grit sandpaper - 2 1/2-inch angled sash brush - Mallet - Hex-key wrench - Adjustable wrench - Phillips-head screwdriver - 2-foot level Hardware: Custom Service Hardware Rolling Hook Ladder Hardware Kit in Black, about $503; 8-Foot Round Rail in Black, about $95; four Vertical Hook Brackets, about $10 each; Stop Kit with round black finials, about $45; Red Oak Top Rung (spindle), about $14; Custom Service Hardware [https://www.cshardware.com/] Cut list for Building a Rolling Library Ladder Designed to reach an 8½-foot-tall shelf (on a 10-foot-high bookcase) in the climbing position. 1x4 red oak boards for the handrails: two @ 107 inches 1x5 red oak boards for the treads: one @ 103¼ inches, cut to seven 14¾-inch lengths ¾-inch red oak spindle: one @ 15¼ inches Note: Although the formula from Custom Service Hardware for sizing and angling the handrails is ideal for a track installed 7 feet 7 inches high, the company applies it to ladders of any size. This saves a step of calculating angles but means that shorter ladders will have a shallower pitch and taller ladders a steeper one. The design of the wheels allows them to maintain solid contact with the floor for ladders made with this formula for bookcases as tall as 18 feet. Dig into the personal and political assassination of Roman dictator Julius Caesar, and find out why his senators plotted against him. -- On March 15th, 44 BCE, Roman dictator Julius Caesar was assassinated by a group of about 60 of his own senators. Why did these self-titled Liberators want him dead? And why did Brutus, whose own life had been saved by Caesar, join in the plot? Who on Earth is exposed to the most ionizing radiation? Check out Audible: http://bit.ly/AudibleVe I m filming a documentary for TV about how Uranium and radioactivity have shaped the modern world. It will be broadcast in mid-2015, details to come. The filming took me to the most radioactive places on Earth (and some places, which surprisingly aren t as radioactive as you d think). Chernobyl and Fukushima were incredible to see as they present post-apocalyptic landscapes. I also visited nuclear power plants, research reactors, Marie Curie s institute, Einstein s apartment, nuclear medicine areas of hospitals, uranium mines, nuclear bomb sites, and interviewed numerous experts. Notes about measuring radiation: Sieverts are a measure of effective dose - that means they measure the biological impact of the energy transferred to tissues from radiation. Obviously I owe a debt to the fantastic chart made by xkcd, which inspired my visual approach to this video. https://xkcd.com/radiation/ DOSES MAY VARY The level of radiation varies widely around the world depending mainly on altitude and geology (excluding nuclear accidents). Estimates of particular doses also vary. All numbers reported in this video should be taken as order of magnitude only. The most contentious claim may be that smokers receive the highest dose of ionizing radiation. This is not a whole body dose, but a dose to the lungs as specified in the video. From plant pollination to pest control, explore how bats contribute to ecosystems and the importance of protecting bats to reduce the risk of transmitting disease. -- What flies through the night, silently guarding and protecting our world from evil? Batman? Try... a bat. Like Batman, bats are widely misunderstood and vilified. Amy Wray disproves the myth that bats are dangerous villains and explains why they, instead, deserve a hero s welcome -- and our protection. Lesson by Amy Wray, animation by TED-Ed. A little video put together from our 5 day sail from Crete to Malta. Some bad weather for the first 24 hours, first encounter with water spouts (we ran into 4 in one day..)! Finally caught some Tuna trawling.. after 3 months worth of trawling in the Med.. Arrived in in beautiful Malta, and discovered a few problems: -The bilge was pumping more than usual.. turns out the stuffing box is taking in water. -The auto pilot was also making strange creaking noises.. Riley climbed into the TINY stern cabin (which I believe an octopus would struggle to squeeze into) and the rudder has broken free of its casing.. we believe when we ran aground in Turkey this is what has caused it.. better we have discovered this now rather than half way across the Atlantic.. -Also the wind speed indicator has given up on life. Need s to be looked at. On the bright side tomorrow I get to set up the Christmas tree. Enjoy & stay tuned for more vids!Enjoy the vid! Stay tuned for more video s. Ps.
