Red Admiral Butterfly - Butterflies in Cornwall The Red Admiral is a common and regular migrant to the UK which in mild winters also survives here (primarily in the south of England) so some of the population are from resident stock. This large black butterfly with a flash of vivid orange-red across its forewings and around the edge of its rear wings and a splatter of white spots towards its wing-tips is a common sight in our gardens during mid-late summer. They are often found nectaring on garden Buddleias Michaelmas Daisy or Ice Plant or during late summer/early autumn seen feeding often in large numbers on flowering Ivy and rotting fruit in gardens and orchards. Sightings of the Red Admiral can continue well into November on sunny days and they are often reported during December, January and February when almost all other species of butterfly are unlikely to be seen. WHERE TO SEE THE RED ADMIRAL IN THE BRITISH ISLES This familiar butterfly can be found anywhere in Britain in almost all habitat types. It is a strong flyer and is known to migrate from continental Europe to the UK every year. Global warming will no doubt help it to become firmly established as a resident species in the future across Britain. The Most Beautiful Peacock Dance Display Ever - Peacocks Opening Feathers and Bird Sound HD Peacocks are large, colorful pheasants typically blue and green and known for their iridescent tails. Many people ask if peacocks are birds of paradise, to which the answer is no - a bird of paradise belongs to a totally seperate family of birds. These tail feathers of the peacock, or coverts, spread out in a distinctive train that is more than 60 percent of the birds total body length and boast colorful "eye" markings of blue, gold, red, and other hues. The large train is used in mating rituals and courtship displays. It can be arched into a magnificent fan that reaches across the bird s back and touches the ground on either side. Females are believed to choose their mates according to the size, color, and quality of these outrageous feather trains. The term "peacock" is commonly used to refer to birds of both sexes. Technically, only male bird is a are peacock. Females are peahens, and together, they are called peafowl. Suitable males may gather harems of several females, each of which will lay three to five eggs. In fact, wild peafowl often roost in forest trees and gather in groups called parties. Peacocks are ground feeders that eat insects, plants, and small creatures. There are two familiar peacock species. The blue peacock lives in India and Sri Lanka, while the green peacock is found in Java and Myanmar (Burma). A more distinct and little-known species, the Congo peacock, inhabits African rain forests. Peacocks can be noisy, they have a very loud high-pitched meow like sound . They call a lot during the mating season. Dawn and late evening is a favourite time for this. Fulmar Birds at Hells Mouth in Cornwall Almost gull-like, this grey and white seabird is related to the albatrosses. It flies low over the sea on stiff wings, with shallow wingbeats, gliding and banking to show its white underparts then grey upperparts. At its breeding sites it will fly high up the cliff face, riding the updraughts. They will feed in flocks out at sea. They defend their nests from intruders by spitting out a foul-smelling oil. WHERE TO SEE THEM Always offshore, except when breeding. Found near all suitable cliffs. Best looked for at seabird colonies - most abundant along Scottish coastline, especially on the Northern Isles. Least common along the east, south and north-west coasts of England. WHEN TO SEE THEM Present at the breeding sites nearly all year, although young birds leave in late summer. Can be most easily seen offshore, away from breeding areas, from August to November. WHAT THEY EAT Fish waste and crustaceans. Filmed on 18th Janurary 2011 Video Produced by Paul Dinning - Wildlife in Cornwall
