Three Brits visit a market in Avignon in southern France, before trying to sell for a profit in Bristol. French Collection is a daytime competition for Channel 4 (UK) where three amateur dealers with an eye for profit get a day at a French market, a set budget to spend and a veteran dealer on hand to provide his expert advice. Their challenge? To beat their rivals to buy vintage pieces and collectables that they think will make them the biggest profit back home. Spanning just three days, each of our competitors has one day to buy their items, one day to restore them, and one day to sell them for the highest possible price. Having scooped the best that the picturesque towns and villages’ markets have to offer, the three contestants return to their home countries where they have just one day to transform the items they have bought with the remainder of their budget: this is the point at which an old pair of armchairs get stylishly updated with some designer fabric; a dated brown chest of drawers is given a chic makeover with some heritage paint and a new set of handles; and a dirty old mirror is refurbished to look pristine. The contestants will have to pay for any restoration out of their original budget – and the expert’s advice could be crucial in their decision-making. All will be revealed in a nail-biting climax as items are snapped up, bidding wars break out and we find out which gambles did and did not pay off. The selling sequences in the show are intercut with each contestant’s efforts, comments from our purchasers and the expert’s advice and concerns. The winner is quite simply the contestant with the most profit in his or her hands at the end of the day. The winner takes all the profits that they and their fellow contestants have made.
