This is no different with dengue fever – a deadly virus that originally could only be found in Africa, but today occurs over the world. The fact that we now like to holiday in tropical climes, such as Southeast Asia and Bali, adds to this risk of transporting dengue fever back to our home countries. Yet researchers are using a bacterium called Wolbachia to give dengue fever resistance to mosquitoes, so as to prevent the disease’s transmission on to us. By following a project with to stop the dengue virus replicating within the vectors, and by investigating how to diagnose dengue fever from the earliest stages, Dr Maryanne Demasi shows us the efforts being taken to contain the spread of the disease.
