Have you ever experienced what it s like to be in a earthquake? Up until this year, I never had the pleasure of being scared out of my wits by one of these ground-shaking monsters. I ve felt a small tremor here and there, but nothing like the quake that hit Sofia, Bulgaria on May 22, 2012. I woke to ear-splitting cracking sounds while my entire apartment swayed back and forth in complete darkness. I was freaked out and completely helpless. After that, I decided I wouldn t be caught unprepared again. The least I could do is arm myself for a potential aftershock. I got a safety kit together and figured out my escape plan for the next time. I was safe for the rest of my trip, but it just goes to show you should always know your exits - and where to find your shorts.
