BURNING OF JUDAS FESTIVAL | TULTEPEC, MEXICO | QUEMA DE JUDAS 2018
Tultepec is famous for it s fireworks. After the 2017 fireworks explosions, the festivals have not stopped in this tiny mexican town in Estado de Mexico. Known as the national fireworks capital of the country, Tultepec has many celebrations year round involving explosions. The most famous would be the national pyrotechnics festival that I attended in March 2018. It s a 10 day event with fireworks towers (called castillos), piromusicales (fireworks to music), as well as the burning bulls, (toros de fuego) where locals cover paper mache bulls with explosives. The latter is a bit like the quema de judas in Tultepec. Instead of bulls, figures are covered in fireworks, and hung from a rope. These spin, eventually catch fire, and explode violently. Originally from Spain, this tradition was done during easter to burn an effigy resembling Judas, the man who betrayed Jesus. Now Mexico has taken it s on interpretation and began to burn Alebrijes, beautiful fantasy creatures from Oaxaca, as well as not so traditional effigies... Like Goku and Spongebob Squarepants.
