BASE JUMP MOAB: Corona Arch (edit)
Canopy- OSP by Atair Object- Corona Arch Height to impact 110 PCA required Canopy Time- ~20 seconds. I love the B.L.M. and all the access they cheerfully grant us! Many of my favorite projects where most of my time is spent; is on B.L.M. land. I find a huge and awe inspiring difference between the B.L.M. and the National Park Service because of the positive influence B.L.M. provides to the public to properly and respectfully use the most beautiful areas surrounding Moab, Ut. I am in full agreement that there are issues at hand that need to be dealt with surrounding Corona Arch and Gemini bridges-- mostly the issue is that the public is horrendously uniformed, un-skilled, and also unfortunately has very easy access to these features. This is a very bad combination and I quickly became aware of the danger. Realistically all you need for the swing is a 70m rope, a locking binder, an ATC, and a 120 tag line.... BUT, there is way more to it than that. I personally have walked up on multiple groups of people who were-- for lack of a better term-- entirely inept. Enthusiasm is not a replacement for experience. This is the reason why there is currently an appeal (by 1 individual!) to BAN all roped activities from Corona Arch and Gemini Bridges; for the length of 2 years. Roped activities are currently still legal, however it is frowned upon because it could lead to more permanent bans in the future. I feel oddly because I released a video of the swing which inspired Devin Graham to make a video of the swing that went viral. His "Worlds Largest Rope Swing" video, incidentally has been convicted of being the primary cause of influencing the serious injury of one man, and the loss of 2 other peoples lives in the Moab area. This is not acceptable. I recently visited Corona Arch to participate in a non-roped activity to show the diversity and beauty offered by this Arch. No ropes, no anchors used, no climbing aids, etc. For more information visit SketchyAndyLewis.com, or find available updates on the BLM website.
