Mo nique and Isaiah Washington tackle the issue of "raising a gay kid" in BlackBird

[BlackTree TV - Pan African Film Festival] Academy Award Winner Mo nique returns to the screen along with Isaiah Washington to tackle a sensitive subject. The story centers on a church choir singer, portrayed by Julian Walker, in a small Mississippi town who feels like a misfit as he struggles with his sexual awakening and the realization he is gay. Terrell Tilford, Gary L. Gray, Kevin Allesee, Torrey Laamar, Nikki Jane and D. Woods also star. Polk is producing through Tall Skinny Black Boy Prods., Keith Brown through Kbiz Entertainment, Washington through his Coalhouse Prods., and Carol Ann Shine. Monique is also an exec producer with her spouse Sidney Hicks. The film was shot recently in Mississippi. " Blackbird is a film about the choices people are forced to make as they struggle to figure out how to be themselves," Hicks said. "And why should just being who you are be a struggle? Since Mo Nique won the Oscar, we have received a flood of scripts, but nothing captured our attention until Isaiah — who we have a high level of respect for — sent us Blackbird.
