In an historic event, the Recording Academy honored titans of the music industry — past and present — at the 2023 Special Merit Awards Ceremony. Bobby McFerrin, Nirvana, Ma Rainey, Nile Rodgers, Slick Rick "The Ruler," The Supremes, and Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson of Heart received the 2023 Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award; Henry Diltz, Ellis Marsalis and Jim Stewart received the Trustees Award; and the Audio Engineering Society (AES) and Dr. Andy Hildebrand received the Technical GRAMMY Award. The event also celebrated the first-ever Best Song For Social Change Special Merit Award honoree.
