Beagle Dog Walk at Otari -Wilton s Bush, Wellington

Cute beagle Smudge visits Otari-Wilton s Bush in Wellington. This is an amazingly beautiful forest sanctuary, with both young and ancient native trees and plants of NZ, attracting native birds to visit the area, flying through the tree canopy and singing as they go. She explores along the trails along the Kaiwharawhara Stream, the Ponga Lawn, the Fernery, and the Troup Picnic Area, roughly following parts of the Nature Trail and parts of the Circular Walk track. Thanks for watching 🙂 ____________________________________________ ABOUT OTARI-WILTON S BUSH: This plant sanctuary is the only botanic garden in New Zealand solely focused on the preservation of native plants of NZ. This is a special place given that much of NZ flora, experts have suggested as much as 80%, is only found here and no where else. Also as a consequence of fostering native plants (and no doubt active pest management) many native birds are drawn to the area. The forest reserve covers 100 hectares with a wide choice of trails depending on fitness, ability, and time available. The name Otari, in Te Reo Maori (the NZ Maori Language), is a reflection of this area s use in early times as a place where food was sourced. The Wilton part of the name is a nod to Job Wilton and his family, early settlers who fenced off a section of the original forest to preserve it from being turned into farm land or trees being felled for building. Otari-Wilton s Bush gives a glimpse of what the land in Wellington may have looked like at one time (albeit minus the groomed walking & hiking trails) and plays an important role in education and conservation.
