ABANDONED SKULL SCULPTURE PARK | PARQUE DE LOS DESVELADOS, SPAIN

Parque de los Desvelados or Park of the Sleepless is an abandoned sculpture park South West of Pamplona, Spain. Exploring this place has been on my mind for a while, I came across a list of top 5 creepiest locations in the world, and have been hoping to visit ever since. This field of skulls was built as a Momento Mori for visitors. It s a reminder that at some point, whether we are rich or poor, famous or forgotten, we all come to the same end. The creator wanted us to wanted the park to think about life, and also death. Luis Garcia Vidal built these giant skeletons in the Spanish country side for 30 years starting in 1971. There are approximately 7 here, but they are getting increasing had to find due to how they were created. Luis twisted the branched of sumac trees together, then wrapped these in chicken wire and metal screen. Then, he coated these with a thick layer of white chalky lime paint. It s been 10 years since his death, and many more decades since their creation, many are being consumed by the forest, the wire becoming undone, and the twisted sumac taking life again. Why did he build them this way? Maybe he thought that these sculptures, like life, should eventually return to the earth. Mariannela and I really loved exploring this place. We were completely alone until the very end (watch the outro, a bit scary).
