Here s the 3rd movement of Spring from Vivaldi s The Four Seasons to welcome the arrival of spring on 20th March (in the northern hemisphere). Look for this text below - it s currently the 3rd from last on the last page 5 of entries for "The Four Seasons" _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Vivaldi wrote The Four Seasons for violin and orchestra in 1723 and today it s not only his best known work (and he wrote a lot of music!) but tops the classical music charts. Vivaldi s nickname was "The Red Priest" because of he had bright red hair. His music was popular during his lifetime but (unbelievably) went out of fashion as he grew old and he died penniless. The Four Seasons are accompanied by sonnets which we believe Vivaldi wrote himself - First movement: Springtime is upon us. The birds celebrate her return with festive song, and murmuring streams are softly caressed by the breezes. Thunderstorms, those heralds of Spring, roar, casting their dark mantle over heaven, Then they die away to silence, and the birds take up their charming songs once more. Second movement: On the flower-strewn meadow, with leafy branches rustling overhead, the goat-herder sleeps, his faithful dog beside him. Third Movement: Led by the festive sound of rustic bagpipes, nymphs and shepherds lightly dance beneath the brilliant canopy of spring. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ It is a lot of fun to play on the piano and the excellent piano transcription I used in my recording all 4 concertos with the harmonic pedal is linked above. The Four Seasons PIANO SOLO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EttSQR_Zd4g&list=UUc2LOiMnBJbeXQ0_ICcVfXg&feature=share The last movement of Spring is both smooth and subtly energetic to play on piano. It passes between E major and C# minor. The 3rd movement is marked Allegro Pastorale. A Pastoral is a piece of music about rural life.
