Shoppers have been promised relief after official figures show food and drink inflation reached 19.1% in March which is far above the headline rate of 10.1% for the increase in the cost of an average basket of goods and services. Julia Hartley-Brewer said: “Largely it’s this massive cost of energy and transport. There are still an awful lot of people on your side of the debate who think this is all down to Brexit.” Experts agree that the rising costs are down to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, poor weather, Brexit trade barriers, and rising labour costs.
