Dog Emergency Kit - GO BAG!
What s in your Dog s Bug Out Bag? Sometimes natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, volcanoes, landslides, hurricanes, wildfires, and so on mean that you need to evacuate your home quickly and sometimes on foot. A good GO bag will have supplies for all household members, including pets. So in this video we have outlined what we have included for Smudge specifically in her canine emergency kit (although we hope it is never required). We have focused on what we think would be essential for her if we had to evacuate on foot (or paw in Smudge s case). Weight is a crucial issue in choosing what is essential to include. For example, in an tsunami alert, we are told we may have under 10 minutes to "get gone". This would mean we would be trying to run up a hill to our agreed Meeting Point, in under 5 minutes, probably carrying Smudge as well as our Go Bag emergency supplies, maybe assisting other people also trying to get to safety. Weight as a determinate on what to include can not be overemphasized, as well as the need to be able to move at pace. This is also the reason why we carry her supplies ourselves. Some people recommend saddle bags for their dogs, but even if Smudge had practiced and was used to wearing one, it is unlikely that there would be time to stop and put one on Smudge in the first instance. A GO Bag/ Bug Out Bag is only one part of Emergency Preparedness. At home, three days worth of water and food (that doesn t need cooking to prepare) per household member is also recommended by our Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management (MCDEM).
