Joy: Built in the Fire

After a snowboarding accident left Alana Nichols paralyzed from the waist down, she came back stronger than ever. In 2004, Alana led the US Women’s Basketball team to victory in the 2004 Summer Olympics. Just six years later, she took home two gold medals in the 2010 Winter Paralympic Games in Downhill and Giant Slalom, becoming the only woman to win gold in both Summer and Winter Olympic Games. These days, when she isn’t surfing or deep sea diving, you can find Alana on the slopes, continuing to find tremendous joy in the sport that could have just as easily destroyed her life.
