How Long Should a Bird Be Out Of its Cage? | #EngagedNotCaged

It used to be the "norm" to clip a bird s wings, keep it in a cage and give it access to a 24/7 birdie buffet. But now people are wiser and realize birds, like all animals, enjoy working for their food and exerting themselves physically and mentally to do so. Although we don t believe in just letting your bird loose around your home all the time (no ones accommodations are THAT bird proof!) we do love the idea of engaging your bird (keeping your bird busy/occupied) with foraging opportunities, fun and interactive training sessions with you, flight training and daily incorporation into your life! Not EVER caging your bird can lead to TOO much freedom (yes, that s a real thing!), destruction to your property and family life (and members!) and an "out of control" household with your bird having no boundaries/limitations whatsoever leading to excessive biting, screaming and overall aggression. If you find yourself feeling guilty for keeping your bird in its cage too much... find positive ways you can spend time outside of the cage or find ways to make your bird s cage AWESOME with enriching opportunities to play and forage. You can even start a lot of your taming and training with your bird inside the cage! Targeting, stationing and hands-off trick training are all ways to get your bird in and out of its cage safely no matter what type of relationship you do or don t have with the bird. Visit http://www.familyfriendlyparrot.com for details on how to get started towards a more positive relationship with your bird! Do not use your bird’s cage as “punishment”. Enclosures, aviaries etc should be used as a source of enrichment and not a place your bird hates being. Find the balance where your bird comes out willingly and goes back willingly. This balance may look different for each person. Its up to you to find a balance that works with your bird in your own household. If that s most of the time out of the cage and it works for you, keep at it! If it means more time teaching your bird to self-entertain with foraging, so be it. Everyone has to find their own balance because no two people are the same (kinda like birds!)
