Today, @NASA launches its most ambitious sample return mission since Apollo, OSIRIS-Rex, where they’ll collect an asteroid sample (after landing on it!) and bring it back to Earth. How will they collect the sample? Will it knock the asteroid off its course? Is there a risk for radiation exposure to affect the sample? What does OSIRIS-REx even mean? Lucy Lim, an Assistant Project Scientist on OSIRIS-REx and Research Scientist at @NASA Goddard s Solar System Exploration Division in Maryland, answers all of these questions and more in this week’s Explainer with Neil deGrasse Tyson and Chuck Nice.
