Ben does the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Thank you to Melki Ko and Quikrete for nominating me to do the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. I have really enjoyed watching this wave of good intentions spread across the Internet. I have also enjoyed reading articles that are critical of it. I think that it is a good thing to occasionally suspend criticism and simply participate but I wanted to try and add something as I follow along. Some people have suggested that the rarity of ALS does not merit this amount of attention and the money would be more wisely allocated to other more common diseases. This view that of charitable giving as a zero sum game where a benefit to one cause is at the expense of another makes me want to defy such cynicism and make sure that I contribute beyond my own annual expectations. I also read that the millions donated are insignificant when compared to the billions that have been cut in federal funding of scientific research. Fortunately we are capable of both donating and voting at the same time. I encourage all of you to call your congressional representatives and let them know how you feel about federal funding for critical research. I have never been a fan of calling people out so rather than calling out anyone specifically I would just encourage all of my viewers to participate, innovate, donate, and vote!
