Modern Forehand Problems and Solutions - Tennis Forehand (Part One) It s very common to have a problem with your tennis forehand. There are so many common errors when it comes to the modern forehand, but luckily there is always a solution! In this video, Coach Simon Konov of Top Tennis Training will help you to fix your forehand flaws, so you can build a reliable and consistent modern tennis forehand. Modern Forehand Problems and Solutions: Forehand Problem Number One - A very typical forehand problem is hitting the ball late, normally on side of the body. This can lead to all sorts of issues, ranging from lack of power, no control over the direction of your shots but also if done repetitively can turn into a wrist, elbow or shoulder injury. Injury - When you make contact on side of your body (late) the stress of the contact point is supported by the wrist, elbow and shoulder. These muscles can withstand some punishment but if done time and time again, they ll start to hurt. When we make contact out in front of our body, we have the entire body supporting the contact point. Tracking The Tennis Ball - When we make contact on side of our body, the only eye that will be able to see the contact point properly is the one closest to the ball. This means the right eye for right-handed tennis players. If we make contact out in front of our body, both eyes can track the ball properly onto the string bed. Change of Direction - Hitting the ball late will make it very hard for the player to direct the shot as they wish to. Normally, a late contact will result in the player hitting the ball down the line, unable to angle the strings correctly for a crosscourt tennis shot. On the flip side of that, when you make contact in front of the body, it s much, much easier to adjust the racket angle and hit either a crosscourt or down the line shot, meaning you ll have more options to play with. Causes of Hitting The Ball Late - There are two main reasons that tennis players will hit their forehands late, the first one is late preparation and the second is not tracking the ball correctly. Forehand Solution Number One - In order to create time on your tennis forehand, it s crucial that you prepare early. This means as soon as possible. If you re tracking the ball well as your opponent hits it, in the first 4-6 feet of the ball travelling towards you, you should be able to see if the shot is coming to your forehand or backhand side. You may not be able to judge if the ball is coming deep or short, this takes longer, however, the direction is fairly straightforward. Early coil - as soon as you recognize that the ball is coming to your forehand, the first step is to get side on to the net. This means to coil the upper body and move to the ball with your left shoulder facing the oncoming ball. Tracking the ball correctly - the second step to creating time on your forehand is to make sure you re tracking the ball all the way from your opponent s contact point to your own one. Typically players will lose track of the ball around the bounce, they may look towards the direction they want to aim, they may be focused on their swing. Either one is a lethal mistake that needs to be eradicated in order for you time the forehand well.
