Whale Shark Whale sharks are huge fish, reaching lengths of 40 feet or more!! Even though they are very large, they are not predatory fish and humans have nothing to fear. Their favorite food is plankton! 8. Alligator Once on the brink of extinction, American alligators made an impressive comeback. Around five million of them live throughout the southeastern United States, and states like Florida, Louisiana, and Arkansas rely on controlled hunts to keep the population from spiraling out of control. 7. Brown Bear Brown bears (Ursus arctosis) are a formidable force that put even the most experienced bow hunters, wildlife experts, and nature enthusiasts on high alert. In Alaska, they’re known to harm more humans than any other species of bear, according to National Geographic. 6. Stingray In March 2015, American biologist, wildlife conservationist, and television host Jeff Corwin was part of a team of scientists that reeled in what’s believed to be the largest freshwater fish ever caught by rod and line. 5. Burmese Python Burmese pythons (Python bivittatus) are one of many invasive species that wreak havoc on Florida’s endemic wildlife. The pythons should not be there! The invasive species, which has no natural predators, was first spotted in the Everglades nearly 20 years ago, and is thought to have established its unwanted presence as a result of people releasing their pets into the wild. 4. Snapping Turtle In August of this year, biologists with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) caught three Suwannee alligator snapping turtles (Macrochelys suwanniensis) over a week-long span. 3. Oarfish Giant oarfish (Regalecus glesne) are the world’s longest bony fish species, reaching up to 56 feet (17 meters) in length. Little is known about them, despite the species being formally described in 1772, because the species lives at depths of around 3,300 feet (1,000 meters). We barely ever see them! 2. Opah Fish While fishing for swordfish off the Virginia Beach coast recently, a group of anglers reeled in an unexpected fish of possibly record breaking size. The friends -- Michael MacTaggart, Jon Wetherington, and Nick Kemp -- were 80 miles (129 km) out to sea, and were about to call it a day after having no luck catching anything, when something tugged at one of their fishing lines. 1. Monitor Lizard Asian water monitors (Varanus salvator) are lizards native to Southeast Asia. The species is the second-heaviest lizard after the Komodo dragon, reaching 6.6 feet (2 meters) long and weighing around 43 pounds (20 kg) on average, although the largest specimens are known to be even longer, and to weigh as much as 110 pounds (50 kg). #largestanimals #biggestcreatures #biggestcatch #originsexplained
