HIIT, or high intensity interval training is a type of workout that combines short intervals of cardio, resistance, and strength exercises that alternate throughout a single routine. For example, you may do one minute of jumping jacks or sprints followed by squats. So you work up a sweat and increase your heart rate, working out at near-maximum effort, then slow it down with a less intense exercise. You’ll work a variety of muscles in one session, which will help you burn fat, build lean muscle, and boost your metabolism. You’ll also burn more calories in a shorter period of time and continue to burn fat for up to 48 hours after. There are many styles of HIIT that you can try. There is bodyweight cardio HIIT, Tabata style HIIT, and even HIIT with weights. There are many benefits to HIIT workouts, such as increasing motivation by providing a variety of exercises and an exciting level of difficulty. A challenging workout can help prevent a workout plateau while taking your fitness to the next level. However, HIIT routines are generally not recommended for those who are not physically fit, as they are quite strenuous and the risk of injury is high. Even those who are in great shape should refrain from doing HIIT every day. 3-4 times a week on non-consecutive days is ideal to prevent injury and mental fatigue. Beginners who want to reap the benefits of HIIT can start slow by trying low impact cardio and beginner exercises, working their way up to more intense workouts. HIIT is great for a full body workout, as you’re not only burning fat with high intensity exercises, but you can also focus on your abs and core and your lower body simultaneously. You can lean out your legs, lift your butt, tone your abs, and strengthen your core while you lose weight and build lean muscle. It’s a quick and effective way to get a total body workout! © GymRa 2016.
