At the start of the 21st century, China is poised to dominate. Its economy has not seen a recession in 33 years, and has averaged 10% growth over the last 20. It has witnessed formidable military and technological advancement: “The next man on the moon will undoubtedly be Chinese.” Its emerging middle class, 450 million people strong, is larger than all of Europe. But modern China is also a bundle of contradictions. Economic liberation has not ushered in hoped-for political freedoms: journalists, artists, and activist bloggers are regularly jailed for airing their views. And the darker legacies of capitalism have left their mark. Income inequality is unprecedented. Less than 0.5% of China’s population possesses 70% of its wealth. “There are some very rich people, but where does it come from?” asks one human rights lawyer. “Exploitation, scheming, and extortion!” The strength of Carré’s masterful documentary lies in its commentators, assembled from across the political spectrum. The Li family are nostalgic for Mao’s regime. He would have shot dead the leaders of a country in which “corruption on all levels has become uncontrollable”. 90% of China’s wealthiest citizens are the offspring of Party executives. Others applaud the ability of an authoritarian state to respond quickly and effectively to the 2008 economic crisis, whose after effects still grip much of the West. But few can deny China’s economic and geopolitical success. And many saw the recent Beijing Olympics as the emotional fulfilment of a 100-year dream. China is a great power once more.
