“Prince Harry Seems To Be Running Out Of Road” Phone Hacking Claim Against The Sun Thrown Out

Prince Harry’s phone hacking claims against The Sun were thrown out today after a judge ruled his suggestion that a secret deal delayed his case was “implausible”. Harry accused the late Queen Elizabeth of being involved in an agreement in 2012 not to bring legal action to avoid embarrassment to the royal family. He also claimed the Prince of Wales secretly received a “very large sum” of money from the newspaper to not bring his own claim. The duke alleged he was a victim of hacking by The Sun and the News of the World before 2012. He applied to the High Court for permission to bring a compensation claim outside the normal six-year time limit. The judge concluded that Harry cannot bring his claim relating to phone hacking, but that his claim over other allegations – including use of private investigators – should go ahead to a trial which is due to take place in January next year. A spokesperson for NGN said: “The High Court has today, in a significant victory for News Group Newspapers (“NGN”), dismissed The Duke of Sussex’s phone hacking claims against both the News of the World and The Sun. “As we reach the tail end of litigation, NGN is drawing a line under disputed matters, some of which date back more than 20 years ago. “In arguing his case, the Duke of Sussex had alleged a “secret agreement” existed between him/Buckingham Palace and NGN which stopped NGN from asserting that the Duke’s claim had been brought too late. “The Judge, Mr Justice Fancourt, found his claims in relation to the alleged “secret agreement” were not plausible or credible. “It is quite clear there was never any such agreement and it is only the Duke who has ever asserted there was. “Mr Justice Fancourt then dismissed the Duke’s phone hacking claims against both the News of the World and The Sun on the grounds that the claim had been brought too late. “This substantially reduces the scope of his legal claim.
