Beagle puppy visits a swimming hole in the Pakuratahi River as part of her recent camping trip to the Kaitoke Regional Park. Often beagles are known for not liking water or swimming too much. Smudge has been exposed to the sea and local streams from when she was a young beagle puppy. She will now happily go into the water without hesitation if playing with another dog or to get to a scent on the opposite bank of a stream or river so long as her paws remain on solid ground. However she still does not swim by choice. She has doggy paddled intuitively a couple of times at the beach when the waves suddenly made the water deeper than it had been moments before, but only in short bursts until her paws can reach the ground. While visiting this picturesque swimming hole, Smudge enjoys exploring the banks and surrounds with her beagle nose. She also goes into the water, and swims (or rather beagle dog paddles!) a short distance in order to get to the other side. Smudge meets a Waterdog that she is keen to play with. This pup is younger than Smudge but naturally loves the water, swimming confidently around, more interested in this than engaging in play in the shallow water. The difference between the two breeds and their reaction to the water is interesting and fun. Kaitoke Regional Park is a popular place for dog owners both as campers and visitors, so long as pets are kept under control at all times and owners clean up after their dogs. If you would like to see Smudge s first beagle camping trip with glimpses of the campsite, the bush-clad Pakuratahi River walk, and what we found useful to take a dog camping, here s the video of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRGr6Dy2rXA&t=204s 🎵 James River - DJ Williams
