This Red Fronted Macaw is STRESSED OUT | Anxiety in Parrots
Life happens and it can really affect not only us as humans, but the animals who have to live with us, too. Ricochet, this red fronted macaw, went through some pretty stressful events following Covid, emergency fire evacuations in his area and the loss of another animal in the home (just to name a few!) and it really began effecting his anxiety level and his ability to cope with new things. Freeflight birds are raised in a way that encourages them to have coping abilities for future events but sometimes life just gets the best of us and we have to regroup and retrain. In this video I show what behavior it is I m trying to minimize or even extinguish: hunkered down tight wing flaps (this behavior has gone on for HOURS at a time whether his owner is present or not) While a lot of the times we say "ignore the behaviors you don t want, reward the behavior you do" ignoring this behavior was actually causing an escalation in it. So we had to really take the time to analyze the specifics about it. Although me coming close got the behavior we wanted, it is not the ideal long term solution for Ricochet s recall. He was moreso fleeing from me rather than coming to Kim (though a freeflight s bird scared response should always be to seek out the owner, so yay!)
