A wingsuit skydiver has a parachute malfunction, after a wingsuit skydive over the Maldives. The Maldives Boogie is a skydiving event organized annually over the incredible island backdrop of the Indian Ocean. World Champion Wingsuit Team FlyLikeBrick organizes coached wingsuit group jumps, led by Jenna Gygi, and caught on camera in freefall by Jarno Cordia. After one of 18 skydives made with the same group, one of the jumpers experienced a canopy malfunction (line twist) which meant his parachute was not in a good configuration for landing. This is not a common occurrence, but it is a problem all skydivers are trained in dealing with, releasing the main parachute and deploying the reserve. All skydivers are equipped with a main and reserve parachute, and (backup) electronic automatic deployment system (AAD) in case they are unable to do so themselves. The skydiver had an uneventful cutaway, and successful landing. The cameraman (Jarno Cordia) retrieved the deployment bag in freefall, catching it with his legs. The main parachute was later retrieved after it slowly drifted down into the sea, only 30 meters away from landing site. Note: I (perhaps wrongly) believe catching the freebag is something I personally can do relatively safe, in an attempt to try and recover the freebag before it disappears in the ocean. Catching a freebag under canopy is not recommended and should always be avoided, regardless of experience or skill. Jarno and Jenna use Sena Audio communication systems to talk in freefall and under parachute during the skydive. The audio is recorded straight to the GoPro Action Camera.
