Whilst in the forest, I forage for some pine resin from a fallen tree, which I make into Primitive Glue by melting the resin on the fire to create pine pitch, which was used by our primitive ancestors thousands of years ago. It is an important survival skill to have and could be very useful when in a survival situation. Whilst at the bushcraft super shelter, I also work on repairing and building a new wall in the large lean to shelter, as the logs in this wall have gone slightly rotten over the years. The next big project here at the Camp is making a wood roof. Since improving the fire pit and raising the tarp roof it has made the air flow at camp so much better. I am still not sure on the roof design yet, whether to go for a log cabin style roof, or a tipi style, or just a simple frame and debris roof. Ever wondered how charcoal is made? Well here is an episode on how to make charcoal using a ring kiln charcoal burner in the woods. The ring kiln has several chimneys for outlets to let smoke out, and several inlets to let air in. A fire is lit at the bottom of the kiln and then the lid is put on. This then prevents the wood inside from igniting, but instead it smoulders and "chars". After several hours of slow burning, what remains is high quality organic charcoal from the woods! We finish building the roof of the tiny house/thatched roof hut and continue progress on making a mini village for my one year old daughter. Using water reed and long straw, we tile the thatch in layers to provide a thick insulating and water proof layer. For the walls, we use a cob mix of clay, sand and straw (an ancient primitive technology that is still used on buildings today). The ratio we used was: 4 parts sand, 1 part clay, 1 part straw (estimates). This we mixed together and moulded it to the hazel stick wall (wattle and daub).
