Kick serve myths debunked: Former Top 100 ATP Pro, Jeff Salzenstein, is exposing 3 common myths that could be crippling your kick serve potential. Most players make at least 1 of these 3 mistakes... Do you? https://goo.gl/5Tcjz3 The return of serve footwork is a vital part to your success in tennis court. In this video explaining the proper footwork on the tennis serve return. The return of serve footwork is a concept that many players ask me about in lessons and via email. Most players are told to just react to the serve and not worry about having the proper the return of serve footwork. If you don't learn the proper footwork, then you'll be off balance on some returns especially on balls that stretch you. The last thing you want to do is to be thrown off when a big serve comes screaming at you. Learning a very simple move on your return of serve footwork especially the wide serve will help you tremendously. You can use what I call the "Back to Front" footwork pattern. You will see a lot of the pros use this footwork pattern on the return of serve. To successfully use this movement pattern, you'll come out of your split step and load the outside leg while making a good shoulder turn. As you push off the outside leg, you'll be moving towards the ball and preparing to shift all the weight t the inside or front foot. As you make contact with the ball, you'll be pushing off the outside leg and most likely, both feet will be slightly off the ground as you transfer weight to the front foot. Once you make contact, you will place the front foot down on the ground as your momentum carries out toward the doubles sideline as you handle the wide return. After that, you want to swing the outside leg around so that you square up into a wide base before you start recovering back to the middle. This is the most efficient return of serve footwork pattern to handle wide returns. Jeff Salzenstein, Former top 100 ATP Player and USTA High-Performance Coach, performs a tennis serve breakdown from a high level player, where he shares a simple tip to improve your serve balance. Jeff will also show you a couple of cool tricks that are going to help take your serve to the next level in real time. Here’s a summary from Jeff’s detailed tennis serve analysis: From a strategy standpoint, he’s standing away from the T which will allow him to get more angle in the deuce court. Jeff considers that he can improve his stance by having his back foot parallel to the baseline. This will help him to effectively turn his shoulders and properly coil his hips. Next, it’s important to note where the player lands after contacting the ball. He’s jumping way too far to the left, and that’s a common problem Jeff has seen when players try to hit topspin serves. Instead, when you toss the ball left, focus on landing in line to where your front foot was at the beginning. You can place a cone just in front of the service line, and use it as a reference point to work on your balance. Keep in mind that this movement requires solid athleticism as well as great mobility and stability on your spine. Finally, Jeff suggests becoming more aware of the way you land after the serve. The cone drill will help improve your balance and allow you to develop a better tennis serve. Rafa Nadal Forehand Secret Revealed The buggy whip forehand is arguably one of the best shots of Rafael Nadal. He has used the forehand to dominate most of his opponents over the last decade, and win multiple majors. In this forehand lesson, Jeff Salzenstein breaks down the Rafael Nadal buggy whip forehand. He reveals the technical and strategic secrets that can help you master this amazing shot. Jeff has seen many junior, club, and even professional tennis players who have the wrong technique on the buggy whip forehand. They tend to swing up and finish on the same side of your body. This can cause major injuries on your shoulder in the long run, as well as prevent you from hitting your forehand with the maximum amount of power and spin possible. Extension is the main key to master Rafael Nadal’s buggy whip forehand. You must extend out to the target, before it comes back around to the same side of the body. There are many places on the court where Nadal uses his buggy whip forehand. Jeff reveals four specific scenarios, where you can implement this shot. Use #1: Forehand cross-court: If you’re a left, you have the advantage to go right at your opponent’s backhand. If you’re a righty, you can still use this shot to pull your opponent’s off the court. Use #2 Forehand down the line: This is quite an effective shot to change directions, and surprise your opponents. Use #3 Running forehand: The buggy whip forehand is the best option to deal with wide balls when you’re on the run. Pete Sampras made this buggy whip forehand on the run famous Use #4 Approach shot: If you get a short ball, you can use the buggy whip and advance to the net. This is a great way to take the ball early and be aggressive. When you’re under pressure and the ball is coming fast, you can consider using the buggy whip forehand. Playing against an opponent who is consistent, aims down the middle, and uses the forehand slice consistently can be frustrating. In this tennis lesson, Jeff Salzenstein reveals one powerful singles strategy that can help you beat this unorthodox type of player, as he delivers a detailed point-play breakdown. Jeff shares valuable insights on how to practice this unique strategy to play smarter and winning tennis. He recommends placing your return of serve down the middle with great depth and net clearance. Then, hitting an inside out slice to make your opponent move off the court, and using your forehand down the line to go for a winner. When you get pulled off the court, consider going crosscourt with a short angle, ripping this shot down the line, or aiming to the middle part of the court on the ad side. Jeff prefers loading the outside leg to hit an open stance forehand when you’re close to the singles sideline and intend to go down the line. In summary, going down the line earlier in the point can give you the advantage of playing proactive tennis which is absolutely critical for your success. Pronation is one of the most misunderstood concepts in tennis. Jeff Salzenstein shares seven steps to master pronation on your serve. He delivers a detailed explanation on each element to help you learn how to pronate properly on your tennis serve. This seven-step formula is your “go-to” guide to help you master this area of your serve and dramatically improve it. However, holding a forehand tennis grip will make it really difficult to learn this concept. Getting into a solid stance will enable you to turn the shoulders appropriately and find a great trophy position. Besides, if you can get your elbow in the right position, it’ll be easier to find the proper trophy pose. Hence, you’ll have a greater chance of pronating properly on your tennis serve. Now, having the right grip, stance, and trophy position doesn’t guarantee that you’ll be able to pronate. Tennis players have the tendency to toss the ball too far to the side on their serve; thereby, making it more difficult to pronate. Therefore, Jeff recommends getting the serve toss above your head or dominant shoulder to help you learn the proper pronation technique. He also suggests finishing on the same side of your body to facilitate your capability of pronating on your tennis serve. In regards to body position, Jeff has seen many players who are facing the net while making contact with the ball. Consequently, they are unable to pronate on their tennis serve. He considers that the ideal body position would be having your chest facing the net post, at a 45 degree angle, when making contact with the ball. Finally, Jeff encourages you to wiggle your fingers at the end of your serve to enhance relaxation. In fact, this simple trick will enable you to pronate more easily.
