Hitting the cave air outside Jackson hole boundary in March Snow wasn t crazy deep, but soft enough to hit the cliff, tons of rocks on the entrance, but went pretty well. Climbing the Grand Teton in one push from the parking lot. It was a perfect day to climb, the temps were warm, no wind and I heard all the ice was melted out on the Owen Spaulding route, so I went for it. The scariest part of the climb is watching out for verglas, which is clear ice that forms on the rock from water seeping out, that looks like its dry rock. You can be walking normally and all of a sudden slip and fall to your death. You always want to make sure you have good footing before trusting your steps. I made it from the parking lot, about 7.4 miles, 7,000 vert in 4:21 hours! (although my personal record is 3:30) Free soloing is super fun because you don t get slowed down with ropes and gear, but it s important to know your ability and trust you are able to make the moves to get back down before attempting to go up something. I have been climbing in the Tetons for 10+ years and all my life, so I am confident in my ability. You should never attempt this without the required skills.
Skiing Twice is Nice on Cody peak, the snow was so perfect and smooth, i decided to just point it straight down the chute. Check out some other videos of the same couloir for reference, it s normally skied in a bunch of turns and often has rocks you have to ski through in the exit. Skiing Pinner Couloir outside Mammoth Lakes, CA. I like to use google earth to find the easiest way up and down couloirs in areas I ve never skied before. Luckily i was able to scope this line from a couple days earlier, so i knew it went through. I was able to hike up the safe route, away from rock and wet slides in the chute, then ski down it quick and as safe as possible. Follow on Instagram for more spring lines @o_leeps.
Left town at 4 am and climbed 6k vert in 4 hours to the summit of Middle Teton. I was hoping to ski the east face which is one of my favorites in the Tetons, but the snow was too soft and the entrance was melted down to a vertical rock slab, so I had to ski the west couloir instead. Since the west couloir didn t get sun till afternoon, I waited 2 hours on the summit for it to soften, but it never really did. Some terrible turns in the couloir, (sound on) followed by good corn, some rock walking and a couple miles of dirt back to the car. It was a great chance to take the new ski I ve been working on with Meier skis, The Teton out for a tour in the mountains I named them after. Always a fun day, but the lines are way more melted out than I thought they would be after such a big winter. I m getting close, but still #notoverit. Follow me on Instagram & Tiktok @o_leeps!
I traveled down to Ouray, Colorado to visit my mom and went up to ski one of the first couloirs that I skied in high school. It was one of the first climbs where I needed to use crampons and was the beginning of my love for ski mountaineering. I like to go back every summer to ski it, as it holds snow the longest of all the couloirs up there.
