We are deep in La Guajira, Colombia to spend 24 hours with the AFRO-COLOMBIANS. I'm taking you to experience the unseen life of the inhabitants of this remote part of Colombia. We are starting things off with an iguana catch and cook. These guys do not mess around... Before dinner we get an in-depth look into an ancient fishing technique brought to the South American continent directly from Africa and preserved to this day by the Afro-Colombians. This street food tour in Colombia ended up not being how I expected... Other than the scary experience we had in Bogotá we loved everything about Colombia. The fresh flavours, rich history and friendly people drown out any negativity we felt during our stay in Colombia. In this episode we visited the Perseverance Market in La Perseverancia, a working-class neighbourhood situated on the steep slops of Bogotá. Colombia goes hard on the soup game and at the market we tasted 2 : the coconut milk based soup/aphrodisiac : "the mattress breaker" as well as a hearty 3 meat monster of a stew. After a quick stop at the Botero Museum we experimented with Colombian coffee before things took a turn for the worse. _____________________ I'm Luke Martin, food lover and world traveller! In this episode, we will be showing you some of the BEST and CHEAPEST traditional Taiwanese street food in the ancient neighborhood of Datong and the famous old street - Dihua St in Taipei, TAIWAN. Let’s go! We are starting the day outside of Dadaocheng Temple, where there are tons of street food stalls and a food court. We visited our favorite shop that sells meat porridge and red yeast pork. Sitting under the banyan tree with a view of the temple is the best way to start the day. The cost of the porridge and pork is 85 NTD (USD $2.84). Next, we visit a nearby local restaurant that serves a giant pork rib soup with vegetable rice. The ribs were massive! The vegetable rice complimented the soup very nicely. The restaurant had a street food vibe and the food was priced together at 90 NTD (USD $3.01). Next we head into the heart of the old district to Dihua Street, one of Taipei’s most historical areas. Dihua St. is an important street for locals, especially during the Lunar New Year, as there is lots of specialty Chinese/medicinal ingredients. We visit a stall that serves Taiwanese Bitter tea, which is known to have detoxifying abilities (30 NTD / USD $1.00). It was too bitter for our liking and very difficult to drink. We washed it down with Aloe tea which was much more tasty and refreshing (30 NTD / USD $1.00). On the corner of Dihua St., we knew of a street food stall that served 4 Spirits Soup, which is packed with tons of unique ingredients, but since it’s only available in the summer season, we tried their HUGE meat buns instead. PACKED with pork, green onions and black pepper, it tasted similar to the black pepper buns from Taiwanese night markets (30 NTD / USD $1.00). Since the soup wasn’t available, we wanted to try something similar. We tried another well known soup that is said to have medicinal properties - Ginseng Chicken soup, from another restaurant on Dihua St. The light broth had a rich flavor, and it contained a lot of chicken, with ingredients sold outside like goji berries. It was more expensive than the other street foods we’ve tried (220 NTD / USD $7.35). There was one final traditional snack we wanted to try and that was almond tea with you tiao (油條). It is thick and looks like milk, but has a fruity and sweet taste. It is more difficult to find authentic almond tea, but this place is definitely one of them! (30 NTD for tea + 15 NTD for you tiao / USD $1.00 + USD $0.50). EP.2 Street Food Around The World in Taiwan - JAPAN 💖 SUPPORT US : https://www.patreon.com/join/chopsticktravel? 🥢 BECOME A MEMBER : https://www.youtube.com/lukemartin/join Welcome back to a new episode from our Street Food Around the World in Taiwan series. In episode 2, we are taking you to JAPAN! Japan colonized Taiwan for 50 years and has influenced Taiwan in many ways. Because of this, Japanese culture and authentic FOOD can be found around every corner! We are first going to Beitou, which is a hot spring district that was developed by the Japanese into a retreat. We start at Beitou Museum, to see some Japanese architecture. This building is the last two-storey Japanese built building in the country, and used to house Japanese kamikaze pilots before their final flights. After checking out the unique building features, we went inside the Beitou Museum restaurant to have a traditional Japanese Kaiseki (multi course meal). The Kaiseki featured 8 different seasonal dishes and oolong tea. The price of the meal was 956 NTD each (USD $32.20), which included the entry to the museum. A must-see in Beitou is the hot springs!!! The activity of soaking in hot springs is a popular Japanese activity, and “onsens” can be found everywhere in Japan. We went to Marshal Zen Garden, another old Japanese retreat with an interesting history. Here, we rented a private hot spring room. It featured a hot bath (rich with minerals) and a cold bath. It was 1 hour of pure relaxation with a gorgeous view over Beitou. The room we rented cost 1500 NTD per hour (USD $50.53) for two people. Next, we checked out a Japanese-era temple dedicated to Guanyin known as Puji Temple. You can see that many of the architectural design features of the temple are Japanese, mainly the design of the roof. After exploring Beitou, we went back into Taipei for more Japanese food. Our next restaurant was a street food oden stall. The oden was quite different from the Taiwanese style which can be found in the night markets and fish markets. You can order fish cakes, tofu, daikon radish, vegetables, and it is as authentic as oden stalls we have visited in Osaka! They even serve it with a spicy mustard! We paid 140 NTD (USD $4.71) for our bowl. To finish our day of eating Japanese street food, we went to a local izakaya (Japanese bar). This izakaya’s specialty is Hiroshima okonomiyaki, with decor (and beer) from Okinawa. The okonomiyaki is made with a batter, crunchy vegetables, soba noodles, bacon and a fried egg stacked together as a pancake. It is topped with a special okonomiyaki sauce, mayonnaise and pickled ginger (260 NTD / USD $8.75). We also ordered chicken meatballs (240 NTD / USD $8.07) and our favorite Japanese drinks: overflowing sake and ginger highball! And what makes this izakaya special is they offer a dice rolling game. If you roll two 1’s, you get a free drink, if you roll an even number you get 50% off your drink, and if you roll an odd number, you must buy the mega sized drink! We got 50% off of our Orion beer! EP.4 Street Food Around the World in Taiwan - JAPAN 💖 SUPPORT US : https://www.patreon.com/join/chopsticktravel? 🥢 BECOME A MEMBER : https://www.youtube.com/lukemartin/join This is the next episode from our Street Food Around the World Series. Today, we are back in Japan! Japan’s influence in Taiwan is undeniable, and that means that delicious and authentic Japanese food is always available. We are going to be eating all of the Japanese classics in this video! We start our day in Jizhouan Literature Forest to check out the beautiful Japanese architecture and garden. Next, we stopped into a traditional restaurant serving unagi don, which is Japanese BBQ eel over rice. It is traditionally served in a lacquer box. The eel is grilled over charcoal and coated in layers of Japanese BBQ sauce. We also ordered unagi tomago roll (eel and egg) and Japanese beer. It was a delicious start to day (560 NTD / USD $18.92 total). Next, for dessert we go to Taipei Main Station where you can get street food style Taiyaki. Taiyaki is a type of cake that is pan cooked in the shape of a fish. You can choose from many different stuffings, but we ordered red bean, which is very common in Japan. It is made fresh before your eyes! (50 NTD / USD $1.69 each). We wanted to see some of the historical buildings from colonial Japan so we visited the Qidong Street Japanese Houses. Unfortunately, it is temporarily closed, but seeing the buildings from outside the gate transports you back in time. We also checked out Nishi Honganji Relics, which is a reconstructed Japanese Buddhist Temple. Both demonstrate real Japanese architecture, and are worth checking out while in Taipei. Before dinner, we wanted to have a Japanese street food that famous around the world: Takoyaki. Takoyaki are an Osakan dish that is made of a batter with octopus, green onions and ginger that is grilled in a specialized pan that forms the batter into a ball. These balls are topped with mayonnaise, seasoning and bonito flakes. These are the perfect bite sized Japanese snacks! (70 NTD / USD $2.36). For our final meal of the day, we found an absolute HIDDEN GEM. A street food restaurant that serves a REAL Japanese omakase. Omakase translates to “leave it up to you”, meaning the chef. The chef prepares sushi dishes and seafood of their choice, based on seasonality and their expertise. All you need to do at this restaurant is chose a price. We chose the 1000 NTD option and got over 15 dishes. The atmosphere on the street was casual and relaxing, but there was nothing casual about the food. It was exactly like the dishes you can find in prestigious and private Japanese kitchens. And you cannot beat the quality and price of this meal!!! (1000 NTD / USD $33.78). EP.3 Street Food Around The World in Taiwan - KOREA 💖 SUPPORT US : https://www.patreon.com/join/chopstic... 🥢 BECOME A MEMBER : https://www.youtube.com/lukemartin/join Welcome back to our next episode from the Street Food Around the World in Taiwan series. Today, we are taking you to "Korea", and will be showing you the best spots to get authentic Korean food in Taipei! We are starting the day in Ximending where we found a Gimbap shop. They have everything on the menu that you can find in the Gwangjang Market in Seoul. The bosses were even speaking Korean! We ordered two kinds of Gimbap: spam and beef. They also provided a delicious bowl of kimchi. We washed it down with a traditional rice drink. Nearby, there is a shop that sells all-things K-POP. Korean pop music and entertainment has had a strong influence in Taiwan with younger generations and this shop sells merchandise with famous Korean idols. Stickers, posters, pillows, bags and more line the entire shop! You'll even see groups of Taiwanese dancers perform popular KPOP choreography in the streets. We visited Xiangti Plaza where these dancers are known to perform. Thank you to DAZZLING for allowing us to film Link Next, we visited a street food stall serving the classic Korean tteokbokki (rice cakes) and odeng (fish paste in broth). Although authentic in flavor, it was missing a little extra spice. The stall can be found in Shilin Night Market. Something you can't miss in Korea is fried chicken and beer. We visited a Korean chain and ordered there signature chicken with Cass beer. It is typically eaten with gloves. Locals refer to eating in this style as "chimaek". Finally, we HAD to include a KOREAN BBQ. This restaurant in Taipei is always packed and crazy. It is standing only around the barbecues and is self service. We ordered pork and beef, with several toppings for the lettuce wraps. We washed it down in typical Korean fashion with soju. We were so full!!! Restaurant info : 1. 🎥 Dragon Boat Festival Food in Taiwan : https://youtu.be/PhDYUlRo2Zs 💖 SUPPORT US : https://www.patreon.com/join/chopsticktravel? 🥢 BECOME A MEMBER : https://www.youtube.com/lukemartin/join In this video, we visit Penghu Taiwan, an archipelago of BEAUTY in the Taiwan strait. Penghu is an incredible place to explore, full of white sand beaches, dramatic coastline, historical relics and its own delicious cuisine. We will be showing you Penghu’s BEST street food, local restaurants and seafood joints - as well as the best things to see and do in Penghu Taiwan! Let’s go! We start there day in Magong City, near the Old Street, for a typical Taiwanese street food breakfast. A stall that was making fresh shaobing 燒餅 was our first stop. We watched the process of how the shaobing was made from scratch and then ordered one with bacon and egg. The chef was kind and gave us another kind for free, youtiao 油條 with peanut butter. Just down the street was another stall serving freshly fried youtiao and soy milk 豆漿. This is a very traditional Taiwanese breakfast, and it was interesting to watch the chefs prepare everything from scratch. After exploring Zhongyang Old Street, we hopped on our scooter and explored the different islands of Penghu. Our first stop was the Tongliang Great Banyan tree 通樑古榕. Legend says that the massive network of trees started from just one tree. Now it extends over the entire area up to the temple! We stopped to try Penghu’s famous cactus ice cream. The cactus fruit from Penghu creates a beautiful deep pink ice cream with a tart raspberry-like flavour. It is a MUST in the Penghu heat. Next, we visit the Whale Cave Geopark 鯨魚洞 to see the crystal blue coast, the basalt columns and the cave formation that looks like a whale. This a great lookout and just next to the Whale Cave is a food court. We ordered Penghu Squid Noodles, which is served with chewy squid, vermicelli noodles and a spicy sauce. These are DELICIOUS!!! We highly recommend trying this dish at this restaurant. We went to Erkan Village 二崁聚落保存區 which is a historical town with hundreds of years of preserved history and unique architecture using coral rocks. We cooled off with another cactus fruit specialty, cactus juice! We also tried a local style douhua 豆花 with sugar syrup, Penghu peanuts and green bean. For sunset we visited the most beautiful beach we have ever been to - Naian Beach 內垵遊憩區. We walked along the white sand beach, played in the warm, crystal clear ocean and watched the sun go down over the horizon, which painted the sky in orange, pink and purple hues. Seafood should not be missed in Penghu and we visited an all-you-can-eat seafood BBQ. At your table you have a charcoal grill and you can choose as much seafood as you desire. Their specialty is fresh oysters, but we also tried shrimp, crab, squid, vegetables and more! The oysters were the best and it was very affordable for Penghu seafood! BEST Moroccan Street Food in Marrakech 2021 🇲🇦 We travelled to Morocco with "Moroccan Food Tour" - They have amazing food tours and cooking classes across Morocco (Marrakech, Rabat, Casablanca, Fes and MORE). Go check them out : https://www.moroccanfoodtour.com 💖 SUPPORT US : https://www.patreon.com/join/chopsticktravel? 🥢 BECOME A MEMBER : https://www.youtube.com/lukemartin/join We are taking you on an amazing street food tour through Marrakech, Morocco. This city is full of delicious halal food and is home to one of the most interesting Medinas and the Jemaa el-Fnaa square. We are starting with brunch at Azalai Urban Souk. This restaurant serves traditional Moroccan fare with a modern twist. Their menu is always different, ingredients are local and organic, and the dishes are colorful and creative. We had the full breakfast spread: classic Moroccan breads, orange juice, mint tea, egg & khlea tagine, smoked chicken quiche and eggs with smoked salmon. Everything was delectable and we highly recommend this place! Next we are taking you through the Marrakech Medina, which is an extremely ancient city. Hidden street food stalls dot the twisting alleyways. We try a few snacks along the way to our lunch spot. We are having smoky meat kebabs - mixed beef & lamb, and liver & fat, loubia (white beans), salad and bread. We also ordered a Marrakech specialty Smen - an aged butter. This shop is the definition of street food stall and does not even have a name, yet is extremely popular with locals all day long. For dinner, we are taking you to Abraj Bladi, outside of Marrakech’s Medina. This resort is absolutely beautiful, with traditional riad decor, and fantastic food. The chef prepared us a HUGE tagine and tanjia. We were also served a spread of traditional side dishes. It was the perfect end to our amazing trip across Morocco!!! Thank you to the Abraj Bladi family for hosting us. If you’re looking to stay in Marrakech, check out their resort in Marrakech: http://www.abrajbladi.com Thank you for joining us on this incredible journey! We are in Vancouver city and in this episode we are taking you to Granville Island. Granville Island was an industrial manufacturing area and is now an awesome to shop, take photos and eat delicious, local street foods! First, we take the Aquabus ferry to get to the island ($6.25 CAD / $4.73 USD)! Our first stop was Longliner Seafoods, which is a third generation institution on Granville Island. They specialize in Pacific salmon, and we ordered their Maple candied salmon ($8.32 CAD / $6.30 USD) and their double smoked Sockeye salmon ($10.96 CAD / $8.30 USD). Next, next we visit Stock Market, where they make fresh soups and stocks everyday. We ordered their soups of the day: Clam Chowder ($6.50 CAD / $4.92 USD) and Vegetable Bisque ($5.25 CAD / $3.98 USD). Each soup came with a piece of focaccia. It was time for dessert, so we joined the line at Lee’s Donuts. Lee’s Donuts is one of the most popular shops on Granville Island. We ordered a 1/2 dozen donuts ($13.25 CAD / $10.03 USD) and ordered some of the more famous flavours, like Bavarian cream. All donuts are handmade in the shop and super fresh. To end the day of eating, we stopped by Granville Island Brewing. This brewery specializes in small batch beers, and we tried their IPA and lager small batch ($7.75 CAD / $5.87). The building had a great atmosphere with an industrial setting.
