Architect Gillian Green gave this small, dated kitchen an update in both form and function thanks to bistro-style finishes, smart storage options and a 250-square-foot addition. While the home was well-proportioned, the kitchen was particularly small. By expanding the kitchen into the homeowners' backyard, Gillian Green was able to give her clients the space they needed. A black and white colour palette brings cohesiveness to the newly opened space and creates a classic bistro-style feel. The white subway tile backsplash and black-and-white mosaic floor tiles, inspired by European bakeries, complement the aesthetic. Gillian added storage with a large kitchen island, along with an array of cabinets and drawers. Floor-to-ceiling metal glass doors overlook the backyard, and an oval Saarinen table complete with a curved banquette and bentwood x-back chairs provide the perfect dining space.

Designer Dvira Ovadia shares two bathrooms and two powder rooms she designed in one house, each with its own take on classic decorating. The boys’ bathroom is edgy, and feature classic white subway tiles that contrast perfectly with the walnut cabinetry and black hexagon floor tiles. In the girls’ bathroom, Dvida uses white tiles with hints of milky pink, and instead of cabinetry, an étagère is used to display towels, soaps and knick-knacks. This design works well for children but will grow with the kids thanks to the classic finishes. The formal powder room is grand with a mix of different finishes and colours, including white wall tiles, dark floor tiles, polished nickel faucets, oil-rubbed bronze lighting and silk wallpaper. Starting with the daughter's room, where Frozen is the decor theme, the designer used pretty snowflake wallpaper, a shag rug that looks like snow and a custom upholstered headboard with crystals. The boy's room accommodates both a newborn and an elder child, featuring muted colours, built-in cabinetry for storage and a bunk bed for when the crib is no longer in use. The main floor is comfortable while still being elegant. A white leather sofa can easily be cleaned, and a double ottoman with soft edges transforms into a trampoline.

Architect Gloria Apostolou shares a small basement she designed with natural and industrial materials that utilizes square-footage to its maximum potential. The homeowners wanted a space for large family get togethers, but that also housed a play area, music room and media room. To create this multifunctional space, Gloria added lots of seating, cleverly concealed storage and sliding doors to divide the floor plan. The walls are painted white to create an envelope of brightness, while dark furniture offers a cozy vibe. A fuchsia chair is an unexpected element that adds vibrancy. To create an open and free-flowing space, the designers placed the dining area next to the large kitchen island, where a custom banquette is accented by a geometric brass chandelier. Unique accents inject personality, like patterned tile on the floor for a rug-like effect, a gallery wall and statement-making backsplash and custom range hood. Black-framed, bistro-style shelves are mounted snugly under the upper cabinets, while hidden cabinets behind the island provide secret storage space.

See how they went beyond the classic all-white kitchen to embrace rich, saturated hues in their client’s space. The homeowners have a busy house with four children, so layering color and pattern to hide “the sins” of everyday life was essential to the design plan. Grey-green cabinetry and pale grey tiles offer a neutral backdrop for vibrant shades. Burnt-orange barstools pick up the colors in the exotic rugs, and a statement blue La Cornue stove and matching hood offer saturated hits of color. See how Reiko Caron brings a white wall to life by painting the rustic print — a perfect way to introduce country cabin style to an entryway or den. First, Reiko painted the wall in a bright red hue to serve as the base color. Then, she used a laser level and painter’s tape to measure the plaid pattern. Following the guide of the painter’s tape, Reiko added dark red stripes and black squares to complete the buffalo check. Tour an open-concept main floor that has the feel of a fancy hotel and lounge. See how designer Kim Lambert used her experience in the hospitality industry to design a modern home that’s great for entertaining. The biggest challenge was creating flow between the spaces, while ensuring they were both usable and beautiful. To bring an intimate atmosphere to the dining room, Kim painted the walls in a mid-charcoal hue. In the living room, she chose a lighter palette for a more feminine feel. Instead of creating a formal living room layout, Kim opted for a unique combination of standout pieces for guests to sit on. An adjacent piano room has a similar aesthetic to the dining room with charcoal-painted walls. An upholstered panel that absorbs sound from the piano also adds a layer of warmth and coziness to the room.
