"Puddle Lake" Expedition (part 2 of 9): The Itch To Fish, Venison, and Labrador Tea

The itch to fish becomes unbearable and after setting up camp, we hit the water hard for the shot at some native speckled trout complete with vibrant colors. With some exploration we also find evidence of man, but it does not destroy the solitude we have achieved through this rugged wilderness. What did matter was having a lake to ourselves, away from crowds, in unspoiled wilderness. We didn t have to fight for a choice spot, or make a reservation - we simply carved out one for ourselves. We also didn t have to dish out a dime for the privilege of spending the night outside. We had all this nature for the simple cost of bringing ourselves to it. Yes, occasionally we d hook into a fish, but these were not ordinary fish, they were natural speckled trout, complete with vibrant colors -- Dark olive green on their backs, blue halos along their flanks, sprinkled with red dots -- and orange, white edges along their fins and red in their belies --- complete with a square tail -- and they had an aggressive scrappy nature to match. They compare nothing at all to their dull, pale, colorless, stocked, pellet fed, fishery hatched brother. Nothing. And all this -- for the cost of being there.
