Kemeraltı Bazaar Street Food tour in IZMIR, TURKEY Welcome to the first episode of our Turkey street food series. historical KEMERALTI BAZAAR (Tarihi Kemeraltı Çarşısı)! We start our street food tour at a famous “börekçisi” for some savoury börek pastries. We ordered our börek with pastirma and cheese. It was very delicious and fun to watch the chef prepare the dish! (17 TRY / 2.92 USD) Continuing through the ancient 7th century market, we find an extremely unique shop serving up an Izmir speciality Turšu Suyu, which is pickle juice! Made up of simple ingredients to be sour, spicy and extremely refreshing. Pickle juice is best enjoyed in Izmir in the summer heat! (3 TRY / 0.52 USD) For lunch, we try manisa kebap, hailing from the city of Manisa which is right outside of Izmir. The dish consists of kebab chunks, served on top of flatbread with a side of tomato sauce and yogurt. It is also covered in rich butter. So mouthwatering and very CHEAP! (32 TRY / 5.50 USD with unlimited tea) Just outside of the market is the Izmir Clock Tower. It is considered the symbol of Izmir and shouldn’t be missed while you’re in the city. It is a great place to take in the views of the sea. We were craving something sweet and went back into the market for shambli, a semolina cake soaked in syrup, mixed with walnuts, filled with cream, and some are covered in crushed pistachio. This will give you a sugar HIGH! (regular 5 TRY / 0.86 USD + pistachio 6 TRY / 1.03 USD) To wash it all down, Turkish coffee is like no other coffee in the world and many shops have their own unique way of making it. Turkish coffee is always unfiltered so expect it to be strong and full of silt. (7 TRY / 1.20 USD) We made a quick stop for “macun” which is an Ottoman candy. It is made in the most traditional way and these vendors do not have 1 location. (4 TRY / 0.69 USD) For our final stop of the day, we had to eat some seafood because Izmir is quite famous for it’s fresh fish! We chose a midye dolma (translation: STUFFED MUSSELS) restaurant. These mussels are stuffed with spiced rice and locals squeeze lemon directly onto each and every mussel. These were the FRESHEST mussels we’ve tried in all of Turkey! (14 TRY / 2.41 USD for half kilo) Want to visit yourself? Here is the information you need: Börek - Osman Usta Antalya Börekçisi Konak Mahallesi, 853. Sk.
