He starts his service motion with the weight on his back leg, similar to Pete Sampras. As Raonic begins to serve, notice how his dominant hand is just below chest level and his tossing hand is above his head. Once Raonic releases the ball, he bends his knees early in the motion. Then, he finds a 90 degree angle with his elbow to reach the trophy position and keeps his off arm straight. Raonic tosses the ball out in front of the court and makes contact in front of his body. He has incredible flexibility on his thoracic spine, which allows him to have an amazing racquet drop prior to contact. When Raonic makes contact, he’s off the ground and in a straight position. Then, he pronates and finishes on the left side of his body by the pocket. Finally, Raonic lands on his front foot, he kicks back his right leg for balance and then brings it forward. Jeff suggests recording your own tennis serve, and using this five step formula as a checklist to develop an amazing serve.
