This includes a massive Betawi feast, home-cooked in a Betawi home. We start the day eating Soto Betawi in downtown Jakarta. Soto is an Indonesian aromatic soup and we are having the traditional Jakarta version, Betawi. We ordered the “campur” and it had many different cuts of beef inside with acar (pickles). Next, we went to a street food stall serving Asinan Betawi, which is a local salad. We tried both kinds available, fruit and vegetable. So delicious and the owners were so kind to give us some asinan to take home! Then we drove just outside of Jakarta (in West Java) to visit a family home and to try traditional Betawi home-cooked food. Our awesome chef taught us about local ingredients used in Betawi cooking, special cooking techniques and allowed us to sample her delicious baking. She made fried fish in coconut and turmeric sauce, lalab (raw veggies with sambal), fried tempeh, and Sayur Asem (sour jackfruit soup). We ate the meal with local customs, all together on the floor! Home-cooked food is always a great way to learn about the people and culture of places! A big thank you to Arie of Kelana Rasa and Rosi of Meidina Bakes for helping us create this video!
