The one handed backhand is a classic stroke in tennis, which requires great technique fundamentals. Jeff Salzenstein shares his best tips to master the one handed backhand throughout this tennis lesson. These powerful tips will help you to improve your technique, and generate more topspin and power on your one hander. 0:32 The grip If you have a continental grip, it is going to be hard to create topspin on your backhand. Therefore, consider using a semiwestern grip where the palm of the hand is behind the racquet. You will need to work on getting under the ball to hit the desired amount of topspin. 1:49 Grip and start For the ready position, Jeff suggests starting with a forehand grip and using your off hand to change it to the backhand side. Make sure to keep the tip of the racquet up while making your first move. 3:19 Grip tension Relaxation is paramount to hit effortless power and topspin on your one hander. Become aware of how tight you hold the racquet and aim to ease the tension before and after contact. 6:50 The first move Turn your shoulder and load the outside leg. You can either keep the racquet tip up or down as long as you have a compact and smooth swing before hitting the ball. 9:09 The backswing Make a solid shoulder turn. When it’s time to swing, step in and let the racquet break the plane in a continuous fashion before hitting the ball. 10:21 The contact point Get your arm straight as you create space away from your body. Keep your off arm very relaxed down by the side pocket as you make contact with the ball out in front. 12:23 The swing path If you swing from low to high and finish above your head, you will be able to create topspin easier and more consistently. If you want to hit it flatter, you will extend out to the target and finish more across your body. 13:19 Finish “The french flair” Focus on finishing high with great extension and your arm straight. Once you’ve reached this position, you can turn the hand and add a little bit of “flair” like the pros. 16:57 The “waggle finish” If you want to improve your down the line backhand, use the waggle finish on your one hander. This will help you with racquet head acceleration by letting your arm go, and finish on the same side of your body Get a free membership inside Tennis Evolution that you can access online or inside our Tennis Evolution App with no credit card details required.
