Mars counted from the Sun, is the fourth planet in the solar system and the Earth s outer neighbour. It is one of the Earth-like planets. Its diameter of just under 6800 kilometres is about half as large as that of Earth, and its volume is a good seventh of the Earth s volume. This makes Mars the second smallest planet in the solar system after Mercury, but it has a diverse geology and the highest volcanoes in the solar system. With an average distance of 228 million kilometres, it is about 1.5 times as far away from the Sun as the Earth.
