Roland Barthes, born in 1915 and died in 1980, was a French literary theorist and philosopher famous for his understanding of how myths operated. The 1957 book Mythologies is a collection of Barthes analysis of French culture in the postwar period. The short articles examine topics as diverse the militarisation of toys, the romans in the films, detergent adverts, how drinking wine makes you French, Einstein’s brain, and the World of Wrestling. Trump spent time appearing in the WWE. How does Barthes analysis of Wrestling and Myth help us understand how Trump approaches rhetoric? Can Barthes help beat Trump in the 2020 elections?
