recreating a René Gruau fashion illustration relaxing art process

René Gruau is one of my favourite fashion illustrators. His works are the epitome of glamour and timeless elegance conveyed with expressive lines, clever storytelling and impeccable composition. I chose to do a master study of one of his illustrations in order to learn more about his techniques, specifically his style of line work and composition. I haven’t been able to find much information on this piece online, but based on previous works, it most likely was made using gouache and ink. For this video, I chose to recreate it with colour pencils. My goal was to study his choices and techniques with regards to lines and overall composition, so I didn’t want to be distracted by working with gouaches and inks (still not quite confident in using those mediums!😬).
