How to test an electronic EGR valve (GM P1406 case study)
In this video I show another variable when it comes to testing this type of EGR valve. (open 5v reference circuit from a bad engine computer) I ll also show you how I repaired this problem without replacing the computer. Engine Performance Diagnostics chapter 9 Symptoms - check engine light (P1406, P0300) Fix - re-wire one of the 5v reference circuits Tests shown - how to use scan data to identify a problem with the EGR position circuit - identifying a power or ground side output with a multimeter - how to use a multimeter to manually actuate an EGR solenoid - how to test an EGR position sensor with a multimeter - understanding 5V reference circuits, separate externally/shared internally - how to perform a pin drag test - how to jumper a 5V reference circuit for testing purposes Tools used - Autel MS908 MaxiSYS Automotive Diagnostic & Analysis System - USA Version https://www.jbtoolsales.com/autel-ms908-maxisys-automotive-diagnostic-analysis-system-usa-version#oid=1014_1 - ATD Tools 5519 Auto Ranging Digital Multimeter with Protective Holster https://www.jbtoolsales.com/atd-tools-5519-auto-ranging-digital-multimeter-with-protective-holster#oid=1014_1 Playlist - (Chapter 24) EGR Flow and System Tests https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAFYVCyenqcrqfDNVnVxC_76uRT16Wjew Related videos - How to test for EGR flow problems (GM electronic EGR test) - P0401 https://youtu.be/QYtYSgglJoY - EGR Closed Performance P1404 with new EGR valve installed (GM) https://youtu.be/HT4OnP4U0to - No Start from a shorted MAP sensor (Honda, Acura) https://youtu.be/za13UnpbH7E - How to check the 5v reference circuit for a short to ground (Cadillac) https://youtu.be/uyncVz_HAtA For more information on this topic, I have written a “field manual” called Engine Performance Diagnostics which is available at www.scannerdanner.com as an eBook or paper book.
