In this episode I show you how I fish (troll) in a canoe solo (works with a partner too). I also catch myself some dinner and prepare it, as always, over fire. Then I talk more about solo camping, being alone, and solitude. I talk about why people are social, rather than loners, and frame it in an evolutionary and biological perspective. If you haven t spent a significant amount of time in a foreign environment, for more than a couple days, it s impossible to describe just what it feels like to be totally isolated. I discuss my thoughts and progression through this challenge. After this trip, I have talked to others and there is a pretty wide range of responses to going it solo. Most prefer to camp in a social setting with friends or family, and there are some that go solo for short periods and others still who enjoy doing it for more extended trips. Those that go solo for longer than a week are by far the exception and will often bring a dog as a companion which helps fight loneliness. There seems to be a psychological factor that checks in and around the 5th day. I believe this is likely biologically programmed into people.
