Two of the major differences that Thiem does compared to players like Federer, Nadal and Djokovic is the way he starts his preparation of the swing. Dominic Thiem leads with his elbow on the backswing and the tip of the racket points down the court towards the opponent instead of the more common tip of the racket pointing upwards towards the sky. This change of position in the racket allows for more space to accelerate the racket head without having to lift his racket higher or take the racket back behind his body which is a very common trait of the WTA players.
