Building a Saxon House in the Forest with Hand Tools: Clay Walls | Bushcraft Project (Part 7)
We continue to build a bushcraft saxon house in the forest using hand tools only. For Part 7 we build the walls bushcraft style - with mud, clay and straw mixed together and put onto the wattle walls. We refine the mud by using a vintage sieve to sift out the large stones in the soil. We later use these stones to create a paved entrance to the saxon pit house. We mix the daub mixture together with water to get the right consistency so that it binds to the walls. Dad then saws through some large pine logs and uses vintage steel wedges to split open the logs and build a step down into the pit of the saxon house. I then get a fire going on a wrought-iron fire bowl and we cook up a full english breakfast on the large skillet. On day 2 we are hit by a rain storm which slows down progress of building the house, but a short break in the weather allowed us to get back out into the forest to continue building the walls of the grubenhaus. This method of building walls is historically accurate for the Saxon era. However, they would have added animal dung or manure to the daub mixture to improve the binding consistency. Thanks for watching and see you in Part 8 where we will likely build some raised beds on the interior of the saxon house, work on a fire pit and finish claying the walls. Then it will be onto the thatched roof! (Hopefully!)
