A day out with http://www.goflattrack.com The Traction eRag staff were invited to try flat track racing and they managed to smuggle me in. It turned out to be a lot of fun trying to learn to go sideways on these specially modified flat track bikes (also called dirt track racing in the USA). We've included tips on how to ride flat track. A big thanks to these flat track guys in Paris about an hour southwest from Toronto, for a chance to try flat track or dirt track for the first time with excellent coaching for us beginners. Flat track is one of the most traditional forms of racing and in Canada it’s making a major comeback and growing rapidly in popularity. The guys at Go Flat Track do a great job of teaching body position, line selection, lean angles, throttle control and turn commitment. After each session on the track they have a classroom style theory lesson on how to ride dirt track that rapidly saw us improving each time, especially as we would get feedback from them while we were on the flat track. Awesome fun and well worth having a go.... Flat track racing (or dirt track racing) is a form of motorcycle racing where teams or individuals race opponents around an oval track. There are differing variants, with each variant racing on a different surface type. The most common variant is speedway which has many professional domestic and international competitions in a number of countries. Administered internationally by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), flat track racing became popular in the 1920s and remains so today. Flat track racing involves between 4 and 6 sometimes 8 competitors riding around an oval track in a counter-clockwise direction over a set amount of laps - usually 4 to 6 sometimes 8 - with points being awarded to all but the last finisher on a sliding scale. Flat track machines used are customised motorcycles, these have no brakes and are fuelled with methanol. Speedway also uses motorcycles with no gears or rear suspension. The use of methanol means the engines can run high compression ratios, resulting in more power and higher speeds (approx 80 mph or 130 km/h when cornering) although the skill of Track Racing lies in the overall ability of the rider to control his motorcycle when cornering and thus avoid losing places through deceleration. This has resulted in powersliding or broadsiding being used as a technique in most variants of the sport to progress around the track. See the Go Flat Track website for details on how to ride flat track, and how to ride dirt track.
